he was obsessed with a David Bowie book that he kept on his coffee table which was a pictorial montage of Bowie's Glam years. There's a video here on Youtube of an interview of John while he was strung-out on heroin talking about this book, and how he loved looking at the pictures of Bowie. Hence, this explains this phase for John of "glamming" it up and experimenting with make-up, etc..
