@bpbear36: as a former local miss america contestant, i will tell you why they do swimsuit and evening gown so that you can understand that it's really not about looks. Swimsuit is a category to assess the physique and fitness of the contestant. Could you imagine someone walking around in a swimsuit and heels with a nice case of cellulite? And evening gown is simply to see how poised and how well the contestants can present themselves.

Lance Corporal Katrina Hodge, the reigning Miss England, has banned it on the grounds that it puts extra pressure and self consciousness onto contestants. Instead we have a "sportswear" round, and fitness "tests" that assess whether your physique is down to a healthy lifestyle or not.

Not at all based on looks? What do you call the swimsuit competition? What do you call the evening gown competition? If looks don't play a factor then those parts of the competition shouldn't exist and the program should just be a talent show like America's Got Talent with an interview portion. The last two winners did not win by talent scores, they were both preliminary swimsuit winners who looked good while performing mediocre talents. It's not all about looks, but a hell of a lot of it is!
