  • what type of ride do you have?and how much was it?please answer

  • Just go buy a Yamaha...find a second hand kit that way you will get a full set up of drums and cymbals (as these can be the expensive bit) for the same price as a new kit (with no cymbals). Drums all go boom when you hit them and tune them properly, so put money into cymbals, cheap cymbals will let you down sound wise quicker than cheap drums will. ALWAYS buy second hand unless money is no object......pre owned just means pre loved.

  • hey i got a question for you vansdrumming and anyone else who wants to answer, ok i got a new video and its about my drums i was wondering if they sounded right any help??? p.s. im not tryin to make my videos have more views

    Thanks for your patients. RVP

  • Hey thanks. I just stumbled upon your website a couple of weeks ago and just love it. I took lessons back in 1969-1971 from a guy named Gaylon Umbarger who at the time played with the Kansas City Symphony. Bought a drum set ( ludwig ) and started a band. Soon along came a guy who could play double base drums and I was out. I continued to play for myself and unfortunately sold my set. Fast forward and today I am 52 and wishing I had been playing all this time. Oh well, glad I found your site.

  • i started out on a tj percussion it lasted me a good while and iam on my second kit a pdp itw ill take me in to intermate and after a couple of years iam getting a ludwig to take me all the way good drumming vanz

  • WOW

  • whats he doing with the high hat, and how do i learn that?? thanks

  • just playing 8ths

  • you can find a lot of kits on craigs list and ebay. Or go to guitar center or your nearest drum shop. I have a TAMA superstar kit and i love it. Had it for 5 years now. Pretty much any top grade kit will last. Yamaha, DD, TAMA, Pearl, etc

  • that was AWSOMEEE

  • keep clicking 1:29

  • hey randy

i ve only got a hihat and a crashride from pearl tha came with my kit ( didn't know they make cymbals xDD) an they sound like blank metal

so i thought of buying a new set (hats, crash and ride) for about 250$

i have not much experience in this so i would appreciate it if you could give me any suggestions about what to buy

i thougth about pitch blacks a bit but didn't heard good things....

  • pitch blacks, are like pretty much painted cymbals, theyll chip pretty soon, and dont sound as good, if youre beginner go with the ZBT set, for the price, theyre amazing

  • go with ZBTs or ZHTs dude its great for beginner i use them and ive been playing for like 7 years i just cant afford good ones but ya dude plus if u play the hell out of them they get rusty and have a really dark sound to them which is really nice

  • ooomgs man u da best teacher ever that help a lot bro thanks

  • EXCELLENT knowledge!!

  • toms sound perfect..i wonder whaht heads they are and how he tunes them.....

  • yes the toms sound awesome but alot of it has to do with the microphones on them

  • wow, this is really useful man. thanks!

  • Comment removed

  • "wow where'd that come from" That is exactly how it is too. Once you start trying some of this stuff and playing it over and over, it becomes like second nature. Sometimes you get a new groove going and surprise yourself.

  • Randy Van Patten: YOU ARE THE MAN!!!

  • theeey sound amazing. i can never tune mine to sound that great. wow.

  • yegit down deezel

  • Do you think the EC2 Coated or the G2 Coated heads are better for rock playing (for the toms)

    Thanks

  • I just finished tuning my new EC2 clears and they sound great for rock, even on a fusion kit. They also have that quality that you just know is going to sound amazing when miced.

  • what type of evans skins do you use on your tom toms? and the resonant side also? they sound great!

  • Evans EC2 Coated on top and Remo single ply on bottom.

  • I have done this alot over the years. It always made the guys in the bands i was in , spin round and smile.

    Thanks again Randy.

Regarding left hand speed, i place my ride to my left sometimes (sorta where your hi hat would be), then blindfold yourself or close your eyes. Then just very slowly try to replicate what you normally do with your right hand

Sounds mad but helps alot. Also try eating with left hand, catching a ball, anything that you normally do with your right !!

  • Love you tom-tom sounds!

  • what is that ride cymbal ..size etc, have bought your vid and impressed with its sound.

  • wow, great...

    i have a question...

how can we make our left hand faster and faster?

    please, answer this...

    once again, GREAT!!!!

  • How do you tune your toms? They sound AMAZING!!! Please get back.

  • Hello...

Your drumming is genial. You are very good inpiration for me... Thank you..

I have 1 question. Why any drummers have the cymbals more more higher ? (your crashes)

  • There is no right or wrong. Put them where you like. RVP

  • Thank you :-)

  • Damn that kit sounds amazing

  • sweet, im suscriben

  • Hey Van, I'm a huge fan. I love your drumset, cymbals, and of course your playing. You were a real inspiration and source of knowledge for me. I just have one question, and I'd be very happy if you answered it.

Are those crashes Z Customs? I just adore the sound of them, and think they'd be great for my sound template.

    Cheers,

    Cameron. :)

  • Thanks for the comments. Yes those two up front are Z custom crashes. The rest are all A Custom.

  • i love how u make those nioses

  • You truly are an amazing drummer, I really wish I learned to play drums when I was young instead of guitar, I'd love to be as good as you so much. :)

  • this guy is good

  • Randy do you break this lesson down in your dvd? I really like the 1st part of it

  • These are segments right off the DVD. I do have a whole section on Ride Variations. RVP

    vanzdrumming com

  • Good stuff... not real technical..it just takes practice

  • he flows so crazy. i couldnt dream of being that good

  • man his kit sounds so nice! i want it

  • Randy, I've posted on other vids too. Just want you to know that you are helping out even veteran drummers that need to step back to the basics. I like the theory "control before speed". Is it true that all drum related t-shirts are black? LOL (Zildjian, DW, Yamaha, DrumBum, ProMark Vic Firth, Sabian, etc.)

  • I love the sound of his kit. Sounds so good, great toms.

  • That drumset sounds BOSS!

  • you are cool

  • Hey van you are sick. love the sounds of those toms.

  • A minute and fifty seconds of my life. Just changed my beats forever. Thank you!

  • hey, your videos rock!... I was wonderin´ can you make one about rigth cymbals hit varieties?, you know like how to hit the cymblas in order yo make them sound awesome, and the varieties of hits....that would be like the best, hope you consider it...

  • Check out my DVD. I have a section all on Ride Variations. Thanks, RVP

    vanzdrumming com

  • van ur combos are so cool...just alot of practice to get there...drums are my life and soul..

  • Van! Your a beast!!! Haha. I love your vids. You and mike johnston are the biggest bosses seen thus far on youtube.:)

  • is your kit in any way equalized during shoots? or does it actually sound like that live? its pretty sweet

    SADIk1

  • I used no effects at all. No compression, nothing. I did do some minor EQ in the Mackie board when I was shooting but that is about it. They do sounds really nice even when they are not running through a board. RVP

    vanzdrumming com

  • i love your drum set and cymbals, what type of ride cymbal do u have?

  • what type of heads do you use????

  • Evans EC2 coated heads. RVP

  • im gettin those. what you got for resonant heads?

  • Remo single ply.

  • Wow! Your kit sounds wonderfull. Can you do a video sometime explaning how you got it to sound that way?

  • can i have your drum set

  • holy crap your kit sounds amazing i would dream of having that sound

  • Randy, I'm debating on whether or not to use a cymbal spring on my China. Do you use one? What's your opinion on them.

    Thanks, Mike

  • I used to use them about 10 yrs ago. They will help to make you cymbal last longer without cracking. I just wasn't a fan of it springing back and fourth so much after hitting it. RVP

    vanzdrumming com

  • Thanks, Randy. Keep the great videos and lessons coming!

    Mike

  • Randy, your videos are so fun to watch. I play guitar, but by watchimg your videos I actually want to play the drums instead!

  • drumteacher76

  • Hi Randy, First of all, thanks for all the very nice, helpfull & entertaining videos!

But where's your fooling around on the TD-9video? I can't find it anywhere, did you take it off? I'm thinking of buying one myself.

What's your opinion on this midpriced Roland?

Thanks again, and.... keep on drumming!!!

  • the weird thing is, i literally have almost the same drum set up. haha. same heads and everything. but i own a Pearl Masters BRX, that doesnt look way too much like a pearl, but hey i maybe mistaken. haha.

  • what heads r u using..i lke the sound. :)

  • Evans EC2 Coated.

    vanzdrumming com

  • u know what would be cool, if u could show a few exercises to achive leg independance, cuz... i cant keep a steady hi hat with my foot as im keeping time... like what bonham does in good times bad times, u know, ive look for some exercises but i cant find em, n ur videos r great

  • it's really cool, but too fast for me :P

i wished u can brake this down and play it a little slower.

    nice sound by the way!

  • THank you

  • Van's videos are great - a real help for the drumming masses. Thanks!

  • /watch?v=rnywlAFbYVM

  • what kind of heads are u using? im guessing remo?

  • Evans EC2 Coated

  • HOLY SHIT VAN! Where did you buy those drums? Those are seriously incredible!

  • i love the way ur kit is set up and how nice it sounds.

  • Its like a very busy stewart copeland type deal.

  • Love how your drums are setup. Nice and close together, and they sound awesome!

  • I have always liked you kit and just wondered what kind it is and how much it was because I'm looking to upgrade and not afraid to spend a little coin.

    Thanks

  • Yamaha Maple Custom Absolute. It cost a lot of coin. Ha Ha. RVP

  • are yamaha drums better then ludwig or pearl?

  • to me..100%

  • gawd those drums sound so tight, you da man

  • Watching this DVD today - pure brilliance. Its made me so much more versatile and i'm actually doing rudiments now! I know people hate the phrase but it really makes you think outside the box. When you mess about with rudiments and the such you never really realise the potential to take the things off the snare and use them around the kit. Love the DVD and I hope there'll be more in the future. Of course, if all else fails pull a face and laugh :) Thanks For Drumming!

  • ayus!

    galing!

  • thanks man, good tips, helps alot

  • Hej vans,

I think ur great. I like your style. Nice lessons, nice grooves and apart from that, nice self mockery and humour.

    Keep it up man.

  • why arent you in a band man ure great good amazing lessons thanks man

  • I gigged last night. I fill in for drummers around town. RVP

  • why arent you in a band man ure great good amazing lessons thanks man

  • Nice vid! Just wondering what make is your kit and how much was it?

  • Love your toms, love the tips as always.

  • Great tip. I have to comment on the sound of this video. The sound of the kit and recording is awesome. Other Youtube drum vids that are other wise very good, have such horrible sound quality its distracting. I mention that on the "doctors" drum lesson vid and was attacked. His kit sounded horrible, it just makes listneing to it hard. This vid is a pleasure to listen to. Look why teach something that sounds like crap. Your kit and how its recorded is part of the total package.

  • First off, this guy is friggin awesome and his drums sound the balls!!!

  • awesomeness!

  • Thats pretty neat, i wanna get that video its really cool...ill check out your web sight in a few.thanks for posting

    -Stu

  • great lesson

  • great vid, cool licks. and i love the sound of your drums

  • this is one reason iv always liked playing left handed on a right hand kit, my right hand is open to hit the toms and not crossed up when im playing the high hat

  • yeah ive been trying to be able to be open and croosedi t would be cool if i could play open

  • Oh, I love doing this on kit. I already knew about using 16th note patterns like that, but this was a great lesson to post.

I'd like to add that it sounds pretty cool just playing it between your hi-hat/ride and snare alone.

  • i got this dvd a while ago, and its great. full of good tips and tricks.

  • FIRST YES

  • You are so amazing thank you for this lesson!!

    FIRST?!?!?!?!?!

  • this is awesome!!...i want this video so bad!

  • Great lesson again sir.. Very informative Thankyou very much

  • Im sorry if someone have already asked this, but, what kind of drum heads do you use?

And thanks a lot for the video!

  • Evans EC2 Coated. RVP
