@TheNewbie27 Depends on what effects you turn on, what dock background image you are using, and many other factors, obviously. This said, if your system has so little RAM that this has to be a concern, perhaps it's time to buy a new PC. I sincerely don't understand questions about dock's RAM usage these days: do you realize that the web browser you are using to read this uses *5* times more RAM than *any* of the available docks just to display a *single* web page?
Nice video, made me try out the product and it works great! I missed having a second toolbar in Windows 7 and seems these docks are the way to go now.
@JcRabbit - Does it have a Stack Docklet like Rocketdock? (set a stack docklet icon to a folder, clicking that icon will open a black box with icons representing the shortcuts contained in that folder).
@WiiClassic2usb Nexus doesn't currently have a *native* Stacks docklet, although you can use Cris'n'Soft stand alone Stacks with it. Native Stacks support is high on the to-do list because of the eye-candy, but note that, functionality wise, the Nexus Ultimate version already features nested sub-docks, which are similar (e.g.; instead of shortcut that shows the contents of a folder, you can categorize your applications into multiple sub-docks).
@JcRabbit - Right now I run Win XP Pro with RD and Emerge Desktop and I really like it like that using the Dock to get to stuff and NO icons blocking my BG and my nice movable systray, task tray and clock, at some point I may upgrade to Win7 (the whole Vsync within the Desktop has me jealous), but if I do that I'll lose RD because it's not 64bit compatible (yet?), so I'll give Nexus a look. If Nexus ever does add stack support, it'd be great if you could change color for the stack box.
@WiiClassic2usb RocketDock *is* compatible with Windows x64, even though they don't say that anywhere. It's one of the best docks, but development on it stopped over 2 years ago. Nexus, on the other hand, is in constant development (v11.5 is about to be released, by the way, give that a look). This said, the free version of Nexus will not support a native version of Stacks, you'll need Nexus Ultimate for that. Or you can use Cris'n'Softs stand alone Stacks in the free version, as I mentioned.
And while you are at it, do another experiment: open the Windows Task Manager, go to the Processes tab and compare Nexus memory usage to how much your web browser of choice (be it IE, FF, Chrome, etc) is using to render a single web page - then get back to me so we can discuss resource usage again. :-P
@willman1661 If the dock is attached to a screen edge (docked) just double click the Nexus control icon and it will slide out of view into the screen edge (just like a auto-hide Windows taskbar). Just like it too, bumping the screen edge with your mouse pointer brings it back. If the dock is floating, double clicking the control icon makes it collapse into a single Nexus control icon. Double clicking that icon expands it again.
I am starting to feel a need for a change too. I got ObjectDock on my desktop but for some reason on my Lenovo laptop running windows 7 64-bit it seems to not work correctly. Does this use up a lot of resources as compared to ObjectDock? I like ObjectDock, but need an alternative since it doesn't work right on my laptop.
Nice video,.. ^_^ hmmm by the way may i ask something?? hmm how come everytime i use/click something (ex.GOOGLE CHROME) on my nexus dock suddenly it hides.. even though the AUTO HIDE is not clicked :( pls pls pls pls help
I need an restart NeXus function. Everytime when the Windows Explorer (Win7 64bit) crashes I have to restart Nexus because the Traybar-Favicons are gone... Please fix that...
@DerParadonym I think you have bigger problems if Windows Explorer crashes on you on a Windows 7 system. I can't remember the last time I saw Explorer crash.
@Danerd9 Not the free version. Nexus Ultimate does, however, and it also features a Shelf (tabbed dock) which you can use to categorize your items and access folder in your hard drive, Control Panel, Desktop, etc...
Just visit in the Winstep web site for more information - you'll be glad you did, trust me. :-)
@ROBBIGO63 If you installed Nexus, you have it already too. In the Themes tab of Nexus Preferences, change the combo box from 'Themes' to 'Wallpapers' - you will now be able to apply the wallpapers that come with some of the themes.
@reeceTHEmelter123 Nexus is very light on resources, so any performance hit is usually negligible. You can run Nexus without any problems on Pentium II machines at 150 MHz or even less. Note, however, that the amount of processing power used will depend mainly on the effects you have enabled and on the complexity of the theme you are using. A theme that uses a lot of animations will obviously be more processor intensive than one that has none.
Actual memory usage is mainly dependent on the current theme and how many objects you have open at the same time, as bitmaps need to be stored in memory. There is also a trade off between memory usage and performance, since some things need to be cached in memory to improve performance. You can, if you want, balance performance vs. memory usage yourself in the Advanced tab of Nexus Preferences by clicking on the Performance Settings button.
@RhavoX Just to give you a quick example, Nexus provides special widgets such as a CPU and Net Meters, Weather and Email monitors... It has over 80 userful Internal Commands that you can add to the dock to the useful stuff like emptying the Recycle Bin, Opening and Closing CD ROM doors, taking a screenshot of your desktop and saving it automatically, power off your monitor. Nexus Ultimate also allows you to categorize related groups of applications into sub-docks, etc...
@RhavoX Anyway, the new Youtube sucks and keeps giving me an error when I try to post a new full comment, which is why I'm splitting them up.
I don't have enough space here to give you a full list of features and reasons why Nexus is so much better than a taskbar, even a glorified one - just download Nexus, read the included User Guide, try it out for a while and then get back to me at the Winstep support if you still want to fully discuss it.
@vishiko05 what's your big problem about going to the Winstep forums and asking your questions there? It's free! :-P Here I can't even post links because YouTube doesn't accept them in comments, and right now it just returns 'Error, Try Again'.
@vishiko05 Again, this is not the place for tech support. Go to the Winstep web site and click on 'Forums', or write to the Winstep support address.
The Start Menu icons runs an Internal Command, while playing with the dock you probably changed it, therefore instead of opening the Windows Start Menu it does something else.
@vishiko05 Nexus is free and, as such, does not expire. Winstep Xtreme is shareware, so yes, it does stop working after the 30 day trial period - unless you register before. Well worth the small price, as I'm sure you agree by now.
@vishiko05 Means exactly what it says. Apparently you're not running Nexus, you're running Winstep Xtreme, and the Start Menu icon of the dock in Xtreme is trying to launch the main NextSTART menu (as NextSTART replaces the Windows taskbar). Since you're obviously not running NextSTART, it fails with that warning. Either run NextSTART or replace the Start Menu icon with a 'Start Menu' internal command.
@vishiko05 Test, this thing is giving me an 'Error, Try Again'. YouTube is going down the tubes. Anyway, this is not the place for tech support, head over to the Winstep forums.
@Unknow23 , Not with the free Nexus version. You can either upgrade to Xtreme or wait a week and upgrade to Nexus Ultimate, which supports multiple docks, as many multi-level sub-docks as you want, and an optional tabbed dock on steroids.
@MultiTail So? Youtube has deals with the major labels just so we *can* use copyrighted soundtracks. The labels are not losing any money, trust me.
In fact, they should be the ones paying YouTube and not the other way around: this video alone has exposed what was a relativelly unknown band and soundtrack to over 140,000 people! Just look at the number of comments asking for the name of this song (which, by the way, is spelled out at the bottom of the information section above).
Actually there is. Put all your theme zip and xtreme files inside the AutoInstall folder (My Documents -> Winstep -> AutoInstall) and then restart the program.
Normally you would be able to do this directly without having to exit the application (the app would auto-detect themes in the AutoInstall folder when you clicked the Import button), but when I added the new User Interface I forgot about this feature. It will be back in the next version.
No because themes are usually made by different authors and are therefore not packaged together. Just download the themes you like best, one by one, saving them into the AutoInstall folder, and then apply the method described above.
Thanks for answering. I know that because of it's free, there is no wishlist, but, I would like that it would be possible open a folder in grid view, and, like the standalone stacks, open subfolders into the same grid.
I already have tried this with Standalone stacks, but, when you have 7 different stacks it uses a lot o ram, what's more, it is almost always too slow, even, sometimes fails and nothing is opened whwn you click the shortcuts.
Hi JcRabbit! Please tell me: ¿The next free version of Nexus will include its own Stacks docklet?¿Will be possible open folders and subfolders in a grid view?. I hope it''s true, since Winstep Xtreme is much more than I need, I mean I only use the dock because all the extra stuff is already available in Windows, Anyway, is a great tuning software. Thanks in advance ;)
Yes, Nexus will eventually include its own version of the Stacks docklet, although I'm not sure yet if that will be in the very next release or not. For now you can always use Cris'n'Soft stand-alone Stacks with Nexus.
i have a little bit of problem with this one because when i restart my computer nexus dock won't open up .. i tried to redownload it but its still the same. any help ?
What about them? Nexus 9.12 has running indicators. It also has several more modules/docklets/widgets than what you see on the video, including an Email Checker widget.
Err, authorized by whom? Not by Winstep for sure, although it has no objections when it comes to 3rd parties distributing its shareware and freeware files PROVIDED THE ORIGINAL CONTENT IS NOT CHANGED IN ANY WAY.
The only official and 100% reliable download site is the Winstep web site.
The freeware version of Nexus does not change your wallpaper when you switch dock backgrounds (unless you specifically ask it to).
Perhaps you tried running Winstep Xtreme instead, which is the full suite (NextSTART, Nexus, WorkShelf, Start Menu Organizer, FontBrowser)? Themes in it each come with their own wallpapers, and NextSTART does change your Windows startbar (although you can always disable that if you want).
Yes, but it's not as straightforward as normal shortcuts because the Recycle Bin is a widget/docklet, so it uses 'skins' instead of icons.
Right click the Recycle Bin and select a skin for it from the Themes sub-menu ( which displays your currently installed Recycle Bin skins). Once you've found one you like, lock it.
Otherwise you'll have to learn how to create a Recycle Bin theme (or replace the images used in an existing theme, which are WsTrashES.png and WsTrashFS.png) with your own.
Well I have to be honest that I've tried every single dock on Windows. This one is very good indeed (okey, the best I've seen :), have a lot of functions (show running applications works much better than in RKL). However, I still miss stacks docklet or setting minus offsets for making dock use less space (those 2 options are in ObjectDock). ObjD and RKLauncher still got much more skins.
And I'm afraid the truth is brutal - free docks will always be a bit cooler than those not free.
1 - You can use the standalone Stacks docklet of chris'n'Soft with Nexus. Eventually Winstep will develop its own version, but it obviously lost a lot of the priority it once had.
2 - Icon spacing is already there for the next release, as is 'lock icons' and a few other user requests. More languages are going to be supported too.
3 - Nexus is compatible with skins for ALL other 3rd party docks (OD, RK, RD, YZ, MD, etc...). How much more could you want? ;-)
didn't knew about that compatibility :) got to check it. And - of course - more language would be really great because I still haven't seen Polish there.
of course, this dock is very stable for a beta, I have forgot to say that :)
This comment only shows you really didn't pay attention to the video. Nexus has features and effects you currently won't find on *any* other Windows dock.
Not only that, but development on RocketDock is pretty much dead, their last version was released in 2007.
Nexus, on the other hand, is under active development. So there. :-P
Hi JC. I've been using Winstep for several years and can only say that this application continues to improve. I am looking forward to the new updates which look great and more intuitive! Kudos!
Not only have I replied to this question in comments already, as at the right there is an info section. Click on 'More Info' and you will find the name of the music in the video.

I hope it''s true, since Winstep Xtreme is much more than I need, I mean I only use the dock because all the extra stuff is already available in Windows, Anyway, is a great tuning software. Thanks in advance ;)
elSaiver 2 years ago
Yes, Nexus will eventually include its own version of the Stacks docklet, although I'm not sure yet if that will be in the very next release or not. For now you can always use Cris'n'Soft stand-alone Stacks with Nexus.

How about running indicators, email indicators?
narcan1969 2 years ago
What about them? Nexus 9.12 has running indicators. It also has several more modules/docklets/widgets than what you see on the video, including an Email Checker widget.
JcRabbit 2 years ago
Err, authorized by whom? Not by Winstep for sure, although it has no objections when it comes to 3rd parties distributing its shareware and freeware files PROVIDED THE ORIGINAL CONTENT IS NOT CHANGED IN ANY WAY.
The only official and 100% reliable download site is the Winstep web site.

ooo thanks realy nice dock better then rocket dock.. can you put stack docklets on it 2 or you can't ..???
10Cristinho9 2 years ago
For now you can use Cris'n'Soft stand-alone Stacks docklet.
The next Nexus release should already feature a native Stacks docklet.

@JcRabbit
Thanks for the vid, this dock is awesome but where can I get that docklet you´re talking about, can you lead me to a site to it please?
Hellzing50 2 years ago
Youtube doesn't allow posting URLs in the comments section. Do a search in Google for 'Cris'n'Soft Stacks'.
JcRabbit 2 years ago
That´s what I did yesterday but for some reason I could not find any results, tried tiday and voila there it is :D
thanks for your help
Hellzing50 2 years ago

In the Themes tab in Nexus Preferences you have a 'Get More Themes' button. Just click on it.

PieterGOESBFII 2 years ago
The freeware version of Nexus does not change your wallpaper when you switch dock backgrounds (unless you specifically ask it to).
Perhaps you tried running Winstep Xtreme instead, which is the full suite (NextSTART, Nexus, WorkShelf, Start Menu Organizer, FontBrowser)? Themes in it each come with their own wallpapers, and NextSTART does change your Windows startbar (although you can always disable that if you want).
JcRabbit 2 years ago
ok thx
PieterGOESBFII 2 years ago
yeah i agree i like this more then object dock

claycas92 2 years ago
Dowload Winstep Xtreme or Nexus from the Winstep web site (url is posted in the video). The wallpaper is included as part of one of the themes.

mrblackout2000 2 years ago
Nope, not at all. And to go back to 'normal' Windows all you need to do is exit Winstep Xtreme. :)
JcRabbit 2 years ago

where you have to back it up before using it?
so winstep does not chang anything on your system. It just that software that changes? when its running..
and when you close winstep. every thing on you pc goes back to normal?
please reaply? if you know what your talking about.. please.. i need to know...

is there any way the change the recycle bin icon?
ELLIEMON2 2 years ago

MichuNeo 2 years ago
This is a first beta.
How much more could you want? ;-)
JcRabbit 2 years ago
didn't knew about that compatibility :) got to check it. And - of course - more language would be really great because I still haven't seen Polish there.
of course, this dock is very stable for a beta, I have forgot to say that :)
MichuNeo 2 years ago
Want to give it a go?
Instructions on how to use the Winstep Translator Helper application included with Nexus can be found on the Winstep Forums. :-)

Seriously please include tab feature, it will then be the perfect dock. Please.
nascarlam 2 years ago
Winstep Xtreme (Nexus bigger brother) features (among many other things, obviously) tabbed docks, multiple docks and multi-level subdocks.
It can't all be free, sorry.
JcRabbit 2 years ago
RocketDock is freeware, and exactly the same thing...
iMPeRi0R 2 years ago
This comment only shows you really didn't pay attention to the video. Nexus has features and effects you currently won't find on *any* other Windows dock.
Not only that, but development on RocketDock is pretty much dead, their last version was released in 2007.
Nexus, on the other hand, is under active development. So there. :-P

Hi please upload shomewhere this wallpaper it's very cool!

Hi! Just download and install Nexus - the wallpaper is part of the included Aero LowRes theme.

Hi JC. I've been using Winstep for several years and can only say that this application continues to improve. I am looking forward to the new updates which look great and more intuitive! Kudos!
