In the Uk if you get caught stealing money from the till its a big criminal offense and it is a sackable offense. Its management discretion whether if they will charge against you or not. I always folllow Acas code to make a desmissal fair enough to both parts but stealing is considered theft no matter how much, Its a crime and it is a Gross missconduct.

Its a serious missconduct, In the Uk this would only be escalated to a management level and no police would be involved but in certain circumstances police can also be involved. Statements would be taken from any witnesses, proves from cctv cameras investigated. All in the name of a fair desmissal.

@DackIsBack Dishonesty at work is a clausule part of your contractual terms in any type of job you do and this is agreed by both parts and signed when you are offred a contract. After you sign the contract between you and your employee you are bound by the terms of the contract. If you violate your contract by commiting a gross missconduct such as this you violate one of the terms of your contract... Well this is how civilized countries work.

I don't disagree with that, I know that contracts are binding- but they vary greatly.

Contracts are there for legal reasons tho, at the end of the day it's down to the Employers Discretion- contracts also serve as guidelines for managers so they don't have to make difficult decisions, as they're already made for them.

As my previous post said there is a big difference between stealing from a large corp and an individual. The corporation is not going to miss the items/ cash, whereas an individual generally would, and they only make such large profits because they exploit the workers by paying them such crap wages. Employee theft just redresses the balance a tiny bit and the big firms will still make huge profits despite it.
