@EauDeYourMum I know I'm replying to an old comment, but there are elements of the film that are very Pagan (Neo-Pagans worship a 'Horned God', similar to Pan, and Pan says to Ofelia that 'it was the moon that bore her', and the moon is a symbol of the Mother Goddess.) But that's definitely not what the film is about - It's just the imagery that it uses.
we would have all liked to have believed that she went back to her magical kingdom and she led a happy life there forever, but i think that was what the creator wanted us to think, that out of all this cruelity and unhappiness in the world espically for a child we can find a way of escaping or coping with the harsh reality that life is not all fairy's and magical palaces. and i think that when we face something challenging like offelia's challenges there is always something else we have to face.
Everyone is debating whether or not the fairy tale elements were in her imagination or not and whether, in the end, she died or goes to the kingdom, but isn't the whole point of the film that it is up to everyone individually who watches the film, Thats the best part about it in my opinion!
i love how you never know if she is a fairy princess who gets to return to a beuatiful magic land. or if shes just a lonely child who made the hole thing up in her mind and dies tragicaly.
i like to belive the ending in the film <3
also, wtf with the religius coments, sombody on another vid sayed somthing like its about wica and the devil.
is pan no from greak metholigy and for fuck sake who cares if its satinism, its a beautfiul filn
According to del Toro in the commentary, this movie was meant to be allegorical rather than literally realistic, although it uses a great deal of realism in its style and use of historical context. The movie's meaning is that in order to transcend the human and become something more, something immortal, in legend and in history, one must first lose one's fear of death.
I'm pretty sure that this was a religious ending. she went to heavenly father (God), she was a daughter of a king. So when she died to she went to heaven and met with God her father. Gilmore del torro just made it a fantastical twist but Ophelia went to heaven. The movie was symbolic to a Christain death. so when she died the fairy tale was real becuase she acutally saw God., then died.
@Alchemist1330 she went to the underworld, bro, under, not above, not heaven, this isnt christianity, its mythology. Only your beliefs can dictate if theres a difference
This is just genius cinematography in this film. See how well that image of the two of them, Pan and Ofelia, holds up in black and white, as pure form and composition, even without the color. None of the beauty or emotional power is lost at all. If anything, it's even stronger.
I think the magic part was supposed to be true, since the moving plant thing made Ofelia's mom better, and since Ofelia was able to escape from her room using the chalk the faun gave her. But then again, we know nothing for sure, so it's up to the viewer to decide for themselves. :)
Del Toro actually intended for the end of the film to be her return to the kingdom. It was not intended to be ambiguous, yet one of the beauties of the film is that 'it is anyways'.
I believe that you can set up a test with this film on who tends to 'take faith' and who is more of 'spectical.' Many skeptics who watch the movie see a little girl hallucinating. Many believers in something beyond ourselves will see a child earning the life she deserved all along. At least from my experience.
@Chipsmhmh The problem is her death scene, where she supposedly returns to her kingdom but is seen alive and conscious, bleeding in the woman's arms, which implies imagination (or hallucination). But then aother problem is the Pale Man scene, how is something so terrifying and graphic meant to be an escape from the rest of the cruelty around her? So it's really up to the viewer.
has any1 read percy jackson & the olipians book4 battle of the labrinth??? PAN DIES!!! WAHHHHH GROVER WAS SOOOOOOOOO SAD if you havent read it then read it and weep
It can be hard to tell if it was real or fake. I feel like it could be extremely possible that she made it all up to escape from reality, but there are some things that can't be explained. Like, how did she get out of her room when Captain Vidal locked her up if the chalk didn't really work?
This song in a way makes me think of the movie The silence of the lambs. if anyone seen that movie like a million times would know why. The music is similar in the movie
@Q2Mars Yeah, but it is kind of a fable, but Spanish and told by the Beauty that is Guillermo del Toro. Seriously, that guy has cohone's. Funded a load of it out of his own wallet too, film makers should have more passion. But moderated. But yeah hehe, that's what "really grinds my gears".
i think, to be honest, there are elements of the movie which are Ofelia's imagination, escapism. A child being caught up in a war and loosing her parents, ect..But i also think, some elements are also real ..Making the movie magical. (: all together it's just an awesome film.
it was all part of her imagination, a escape from the real, cruel world she was living in.... she saw herself entering "her" fathers kingdom when she was still alive (but it was her imagination) after thar escene of the kingdom is when she dies,,, she doesnt die first and enters the kingdom...
The movie is set so the interpretation of the ending is up to the individual viewer.
From an interview with the Director -
Del Toro: .......It should be a matter of personal discussion. Now objectively, the way I structured it, there are three clues in the movie that tell you where I stand. I stand in that it's real......
i know its up to everyones opinion but it all being her imagination dosnt work for me cause the captian found that thing under the bed and threw it in the fire, just to name one thing that led me to believe her visions were real
Maybe she did have a root, she could have found one (it was a mandrake which is a real plant) and just imagined the thing about it being like a baby. That's an old myth. I think the film is deliberately ambiguous maybe it was in her mind but maybe it wasn't I think she imagined it but i don't think you are necessarily wrong either way.
@bestololeg of course, what would you say about magic mandragora under her mom's bed? It was real magic... And, it was told, that there is a lost soul, not body of the princess...
@bestololeg yeah i wondered that too but according to the book its real and not a dream but the film does kind of make it seem although its all a fantasy made up to hide the cruelty
@bestololeg I interpreted it as happening in her mind (indeed, as a way of escapism), but I think nothing in the movie truly speaks against the fantasy part being 'real'. Multiple ways to interpret what is happening, none of which are 'wrong' is, in my opinion, one of the strengths of the movie. And even if the 'magical' parts didn't really happen, I still see alot of symbolism in those parts, dealing with matters like choice and consequence, temptation, sacrifice, responsibility and a lot more.
@bestololeg No it was real the fairy tales , she ends up going to the kingdom even the director said that it was real. Think about it, she had the marking , how did she get into the captains room from the attic, she drew a chalk door , mercedes sees it too. the mandrake was found by the captain and burnt . which in turn kills her mom .
@bestololeg The ending was left up to the audience to decide. Was it just her imagination or was there something more mythical? The last scene showing the flower budding pushes a lot to believe there was truth to her going on to become the Princess. I am kind of leaning toward it was her only source of happiness, and because she really had no real happy memories the vision of her meeting the royal court and family are in place of her flash backs of life. Beautiful, tragic movie...great score.
@bestololeg it almost seems like it, but in the director's commentary Del Toro actually says she really did go back to her world, that it was all true. :)

I mostly agree - though some like me don't believe in any specific concept of an afterlife.
I think the movie helps people understand the need to believe in Ofelia's paradise, the Christian notion of heaven, the Eastern concept of Karma etc.
