@looknfortruth that was a poor response by a Police fed rep defending Police Officers but blasting Police Civilian Staff, when asked the PCSOs had arrived some time after the child had submerged and neither PCSOs could swim, what makes the sting from Paul Kelly worse is that even Police Officers are not required to be able to swim any more so in essence they do have the same level of training in that regard.

went to the special constable interview job but the test/ exam was a bit hard though so now I'm thinking of joining PCSO ..i enjoy their job very much..it seems new experience,challenging fun as well on the other hand..guess when it comes to riding a bicycle most of the time..why not!

You do not have to be a PCSO first to apply or become a Police Officer, you can apply for either one or the other based upon recruiting times

No, you dont need to be a PCSO first. Every police officer joining a territorial police force in the UK will do 2 years 'probation', in uniform and working on division (beat officer) before they can apply for CID etc. Maybe thats whats confusing you.

The additional sence of secuirty posed by support officers is good for local neighbourhoods, though what is the bloody point, why can't we just have more police officers - plain and simple. As for criminals, they wouldn't give a flying fcuk if a support officer was on them. I apreciate support officers and they do a good job, but it should stay a fully fledged police force, next they will be agency workers, great the whole morale of the force going to tatters. Im a SC for the police and I work in conjunction with PCSO's and they do a fantastic job, even though they dont have the powers that SC's and PC's have they are keen to get stuck in with any job backing up there fellow collegues.... anyone who dont like PCSO's need to think who are there main contacts within each force are....

andrew what you are failing to understand is that PCSO's are trained to use communication to deal with incidents, not powers to use force, members of public would much rather speak to a PCSO about goings on in there neighbourhoods because we don't have the intimidating factor that police officers do, however on the other hand, the uniform we wear acts as a derrant which prevents crimes and ASB. I don't know what police force you work for but where I do the public can't praise us PCSO's enough

Unskilled PCSO's?!You need the same qualifications to join as a PCSO as you do to be a PC! I joined at 18 and have done it for 2 years! I had a National Diploma before i joined and have gained many qualifications whilst being in the force! If i wanted to be a PC then i would have joined as one, being a PCSO is a brilliant job! Your most likley to have a PCSO first on scene if you got beaten up or robbed as we are out and about, so think about that before slating what we do!!

They do not have power of warrant like the police and basically have little more than 'common law powers' which EVERYBODY has. They can issue on the spot fines, seize booze and stop traffic. As for arrest powers, search powers, investigatory powers, detaining powers they are fairly redundant.

Look up Common Law (use of force etc) and Criminal Law Act Sect 3 to see what powers Civilians have.
