I like them and at the same time I'm sick of them--I remember running into a lot of assholes at Dead shows...just being honest. Maybe it was better when they were starting out, because towards the end I thought a lot of the Deadheads were flakes and posers :-/
The Grateful Dead was a freewheeling, beautiful band with the most lyrical guitar work ever, courtesy one Jerry Garcia. 'Caught them in 1984 at Rochester, NY and they opened with a 30-minute jazz-inspired jam for "Shakedown Street." For guitarists, we loved the Dead because of Jerry Garcia and Bob Weir. Their great licks defined the band, and they just got better and better from so many shows. Easily one of the best rock bands ever.
I really don't understand how music this amazing could be made, like honestly, this song captures so many universal emotions and themes that I don't see how any one couldn't love it.
i think this is my favorite studio track the Dead ever recorded. such an unconventional & beautiful chord progression, amazing lyrics, and Phil rocks the vocals!
I remember last FL dead show Tampa.......clouds over area looked like giant rib cage.......& after trip , ' met up with someone I knew, who saw THAT too
Back in college, I remember many an argument between two stoned roommates about whether to listen to the Grateful Dead or Pink Floyd. I just wanted them to stop arguing and put on some damn music.
Well for some of you ... you may remember my yearly post. This song represents the passing of my Dad, just as said below The Story about Box of Rain. So many phrases do actually reflect how I felt as he was dieing. On his death bed... the phrase look into shattered sunlight it's your way through dead dreams to another land.
I miss you more each year Dad, I wish I could have turned out to be half the man you were..!
Be sure to search for the "The Story about Box of Rain by"....very cool knowing the back story....it's a song from Phil Lesh, to his dying dad......makes it that more special.....
This is beautiful, beautiful music. It doesn't matter if you're a deadhead or not, or a hippy or not, trippin balls or sober as fuck, but this is beautiful music.
8 people don't like this???? OMG!! This is my favorite dead song!! i loved the episode of freaks & geeks where lindsay plays the american beauty album and dances to this song! classic all the way man...
I unfortunately never got to see the dead being only 15, although my mom was a complete dead head. Its fucked up that jerry died why should such a great person die i mean yeah he was getting old but i would much rather have jerry live for 20 more years then any new day musicians live at all....
@SeaShellNecklaceBrah listen man im all down for love and peace but dont comment on a song saying its bad if you dont like it then go listen to something else!
And I agree with you 09stromby, I too saw The Dead and Jerry live, many, many times. 68 Dead shows and 17 JGB shows, backstage thrice.
I feel for anyone who did not get to feel the sunshine of his voice warm their soul.
Phil is a decent follow up act though, a truly blessed musician as well. I am hoping to get tickets to Philharmonia in SF. If not I will catch him once more before I depart the US forever.
This is one of my all-time favorite GD tunes. Bob Weir poured his heart into this song, a tribute to his father, as he was dying. I love the song, but it floods me with emotion whenever I listen to it.

@shelleyinthecity I guess it just depends on who you are. I think that they weren't meant for studio albums, I think that they are primarily a live band. That's just the way they are.
@belgeode You expresssed my feelings about this song perfectly. It's powerful and uplifting. I'm not even a fan of the Dead, but I can't resist this one.
I'm 14, and I love this music. This music brings up memories, even though I didint live in the 60's/ 70's. I guess they aren't memories, but something similar. Past life memories? Anyways, amazing music to say the least.

Hello today, and hello tomorrow. This song was released in 1970, I was born in 1972 and I hear this today in 2011. I hear this for the first time and it evokes a sense of hope, a kinship to humanity, that special sense of being lost when one is embarked on adventure. I wish this new world of collaborative information continues to live and evolve and I hope that those a hundred or more years from now who read this message still feel the beauty in this music, and draw inspiration from it.

Gtfo. You have no memories you have dreams about what it would be like. Do shrooms and maybe you might realize how retarded your statement just was. Trust me... you don't know what the fuck was going on back then in their heads until you experience it yourself.
@bobdull420 Go choke on a bag of dicks you fag. No, I don't have literal memories of living in the 60's because I didn't live in that time. What I ment was I imagine what living in the 60's/70's would have been like when I hear Grateful dead (and other 60's music). Your username has 420 in it which I'm guessing means you smoke a little pot (or maybe a lot) point is, I think you should go roll another one and chill the fuck out.. Peace
@shinyalbert We need to teach the youth - I believe the expression he may have been after was 'eat a dick ya whorebag'. The link between the number 420 and smoking dope however remains intriguing.
Yes....intriguing...indeed it does. What a freakin mystery. But I guess we'll never know...cause...y'know...we're a bunch of FAGS right eh Koolio123?? "TheKoolio123" is 14 years old and just LOVES this music...well isn't that swell. What's also swell is the name "TheKoolio123"
Gtfo. You have no memories you have dreams about what it would be like. Do mushrooms and maybe you might realize how retarded your statement just was. Trust me... you don't know what the fuck was going on back then in their heads until you experience it yourself.
@TheKoolio123 Glad you appreciate the Dead...you show great intelligence in my view...I saw the Dead at the old Armadillo World Headquarters in Austin, Texas...played for three and a half hours, took a 15 minute break and did another hour. There are no words worthy of describing them Live.
@TheKoolio123 I am also too 14, I feel exactly as you do. The dead give me a sense of relaxation, they fill me with happiness, and calm. I can just chill, think, and calm down if need be. They truely are an amazing band, personally my favorite.
@TheKoolio123 right on man. this song brings back memories for me as well. im only 23 and this song brings back memories for me well. i spent many summers cruising around country roads in my wrangler blasting american beauty. music like this is so special it doesnt matter what generation youre from it will become a part of your life. my parents passed it on to me and i will to my children, im sure youll do the same to your kids
Beautiful every time. Reminds me of summer, or the cool transition between summer and fall.

@bobdull420 You should be ashamed to call yourself a Dead-Head, you piece of sub-human shit.

Gtfo. You have no memories you have dreams about what it would be like. Do mushrooms and maybe you might realize how retarded your statement just was. Trust me... you don't know what the fuck was going on back then in their heads until you experience it yourself.

@TheKoolio123 As long as we have new generations listening to GD, we know we aren't doomed yet.

@TheKoolio123 You and I must be the only 14 year old's on the planet to love this music, my friend.

@TheKoolio123 Probably unnecessary nostalgia. I feel the same way about this music and
a lot of 80s pop songs.

@TheKoolio123 I am also too 14, I feel exactly as you do. The dead give me a sense of relaxation, they fill me with happiness, and calm. I can just chill, think, and calm down if need be. They truely are an amazing band, personally my favorite.
