No matter how 'closely' you're monitoring them, it is absolutely dangerous and stupid to put a known animal-aggressive species like a Syrian in the same space as a dwarf. That big hamster could have easily killed either of the dwarfs with one well-placed bite, and unless you're psychic, you wouldn't have been able to prevent it. shes probaly allergic to her bedding. mine got so beat up we gave her lots of medicine. shes still alive though. Good thing though, cause i loved her like my own baby. Yours is mabey allergic to the bedding. Best thing to give her is a bedding of napkins or something (not pine shaving or any other wood shavings)

Just for your info: I had a hamster who had 11 babies, and, after they'd gotten old enough to run on the wheel, I found one of the babies with its back broken. I suspect that multiple hamsters had piled on the wheel while the little guy was stuck in the wheel, and the combined weight is what hurt him. He wasn't in pain - lived for 2 years with a paralyzed hindend.

Also not everywhere has water that is "hard" enough to form calcium.

Finally, if your hamster dehydrated it wasn't due to being gone for a weekend, it is from not maintaining the bottle and the spout! Clean it once in a while! Calcium deposits don't occur in a few days to the point the ball is going to get lodged in the tube..

Hard water is caused by calcium and magnesium for the most part but "hardness" may include relatively small quantities of iron, copper and manganese, but no matter what caused it, deposits form over long term and won't form in a weekend. However a weekend away and the neglected ball sticks could indeed dehydrate your hamster.

I recently rescued two hamsters. a chinese and a winter white dwarf that had been housed together. their previous owner was not aware that they were different species. the winter white bit lumps out of the chinese's back and she still has scars.

You should mix different species of hamster together, especially not syrians (your 'long-hair hamster' is a syrian). Syrians are solitary and should *not* be with any other animal, ever. Dwarfs ('minis') do live in pairs, but not winter white/chinese combanations.

Also, I suggest that you change the wheel. That wheel is runged and your hamsters legs can get stuck and broken. I don't think you'd like a vet bill, would you?
