  • Wow! 43172 now has an MTU-engine, but still has a bit of a Valenta sound to it, which I probably call it "MT-Val"! :)

  • These were the original lights the HSTs have had for 30 years - now most companies have replaced them with the newer style ones including FGW now.

  • the fuel injectors, its the amount of fuel added to cylinders. black - mixture too rich, white - mixture too poor. though black is usually only seen on old engines like EE mirlees sulzer etc.

  • As to my post just then its the fuel injectors that need adjusting normally and if the smoke is black then you adjust the fuel mixture

  • actually i basically do the same as you, when i get the chance i may go out to record afew and take some pictures, and if a magazine is good then ill buy it. I don't even live near any hsts, i live in telford shropshire, the nearest i know are in derby which i went to once because i had the money and had a mate with me but we didnt spend hours on the platform, we took afew vids and pictures and then went to the shopping centre to buy food before going home.

    If it don't burn properly, it builds up in the exhaust manifold until more power is required (therfore more exhaust emited) and this blows it all away!

    Yes, HSTs and all diesels 'clag' slightly when they 'rev up' from idle and all the unburnt 'junk' gets thrown out of the exhaust silencer, but WATCH THE FUCKING VIDEO, that is kicking out shit all the way until it goes out of the shot, which means its BUGGERED. Probably got a fucked injector or maybe its just because its an old, ragged, life-expired Valenta. So there, your all wrong.
