  • I heard this for the first time in 1976 ish? in West Germany... as it was then..... and couldnt find it anywhere after that...... very poignant......

  • Continuing, if I may from my response: on "Take me to Tomorrow" John does James Taylor's "Carolina in My Mind" - and blows James' version away. He finds the venom in the song and doesn't shy away from it. Brutal - and brilliant. A lot of his fans did not care for this side of him. To me - it made him so very human and I enjoyed his lighter songs for it.

  • a lovely tribute to all those poor boys.

they gave their lives, no matter one thinks of the wars they were involved in,

    then and now.

  • This is the saddest song ever written, I tear every time I hear it.

  • What album is this song from?

  • @rockesque John's second album: Take Me to Tomorrow" - which, at last check, is not available on CD. Probably the most well-known song on the album is "Starwood in Aspen". As someone who has suffered from depression I kicked myself when I learned that John had been diagnosed with bipolar disorder. It should have been apparent from the first two albums. "Take Me" was as dark as "Rhymes and Reasons" was bright. I'm disappointed - over at Amazon I talked about John's darker work.

  • Sad indeed--I never heard this before.

  • The saddest song ever written.

  • One of them anyway. I think another of Paxton's songs ties with it. Its called "The Bravest" and its about the firefighters on 9/11

  • Tom Paxton's great anti-war song sounds quite good with the John Denver vocals. Hadn't heard this version until now.

  • I love this song - wish you were still with us John - will never forget you.

  • The first time I saw John Denver on a BBC 2 show in 1972 he sang this song and I was blown away by the emotion he put into it.

This is a beautiful tribute to those who have gone and for those who are left behind.

  • BRAVO JOHN DENVER!

  • Nice video and I forgot John Denver had covered this. But do you know how to spell "their?"

  • sorry about the spelling, I guess I wasn't paying attention.

  • I certainly hope you realized I was being tongue in cheek with that comment. I'm not a spelling/grammar Nazi.

  • wow

my uncles name was jimmy newman

and he died after serving all of his adult life in the military

    weird

  • a very special song for me..reminds me of a dear friend no longer around.. RIP BSMcC

  • Thank you for this.
