Before I shipped of to Vietnam the summer of '66 I saw Steven Still with Buffalo Spingfield at the Whiskey, again in Big Sur summer of 1969 with CSNY right after my discharge from the Marines and then again in Portland, Ore in 1977 but never, never have I seen him shred and rip as he does here on Black Queen.. OMG!!! He, in my opinion was, is, and always will be one of the best ever, both as a writer and a guitarist. Buffalo Springfield, short-lived as it was and CSN/CSNY made forever music!!!
@Refugio93117 First...thank you for your service. My son is a Marine who has done three tours in the sand. Secondly, ITA w/ your assessment of Stephen Stills. He's just awesome all the way around. I was a bit too young to see them in their heyday (I was 9 during Woodstock) but enjoy their old stuff wholeheartedly.
i'm sure i can hear an octave effect of some kind here!! sounds alot like my ampeg scrambler rather than the regular octavier type...i could be wrong though..
I love Stills - but frankly he is just uncomfortable here on an electric. His best stuff is always jammn acoustic and getting awesome tone and vibrato.
I really like this version! I used to listen to Stills ALL the time. I saw him in Stills/Young Band, with Crosby and Nash and I saw him solo at Cincinnati Music Hall. What a talented musician he is!
@HeySocialWorker this is stills at his worse, being a player myself i can gaurantee he is ashamed of this version and his conduct on stage, and the way he tries to slide up and down the neck.he is FUCKED UP.cant u c that?
@fandango67 Stills is equallygood on electric or accoustic; but I agree this is not his best. This number works better on accoustic, in intimate settings.
I reckon UR right: toward the beginning of the song he wasn't hitting the best choice of notes, was he? He 'could' have made some of them work better ~ but he didn't.
I have this video and Stephen playin this way was so AWESOME what he learned from Jimmie was exactly what he is playing He is channelling Jimmie here. He told Stephen to drive and he is DRIVING!!!
It was fine where I sat :-) the Youtube clips from the Wembley gig just don't do the day justice ..the BBC vt'd it and I always wondered why it was never shown..
@damagedangel08 YUP! BTW, Not sure why Mr Young isn't mentioned in the title, but he was definitely there, and you even catch a few glimpses of him on rhythm guitar... :)
I caught this tour at the Capital Center outside DC. I was 18. He walked out with the same guitar as here and ripped in to a couple Hendrix songs. Watch Metal being born.
most people dont know this but the studio version of this tune featured most of the Grateful Dead as backing band...it rocks

stephen has even recorded with hendrix. He is not only a guitarrist, but also does the bass, drums, keyboards. E is also a composer.
But Cros/ Still/Nash/young was a rare gathering of super talents. Their songs is a picture of those days. Great!

I wish I could heard the sweet version on the boxed set

I'll admit this is a unique rendition of this song but everything considered, the top 3 versions of this he did are from:
1) Supershow - In my opinion, this is Stephen's greatest vocal of all time
2) Just Roll Tape - beautiful acoustic version
3) CSN Box Set / unreleased 4-Way Street? - another just beautiful acoustic version

The Rolling Stone Magazine voted Stills to number 28 of the 100 best guitar players ever. I love him.

Stills in his "I'm hard to handle so let me compensate by blowing your ears off" phase.
Brilliant blues playing, though.

Dude, all you can hear is Neil, Stills is WAY low in the mix, which is a pity. With a proper mix, this concert could've sounded a lot better.
