  • Isnt this called dapping? Usually done with a good long 15 foot dapping rod, silk to leader/tippet. there images of dapping on Irish rivers. Do search for dapping or Ireland mayfly.

  • Its definitely similar to dappling. The difference would be that when dappling, you are usually setting the fly on top of the water in hard to reach places, usually with little current. With skating, you allow the current to drag the fly accross the top of the water.

  • no, actually its very common to see bugs skittering around on the surface. Both mayflies and caddis bounce on the surface when they are laying eggs!

  • not sure about caddis and mayflies but ive caught trout that way with hoppers

  • that is very unatural. little bugs and flies cannot swim against the current and fish will normally not take that.

  • on a small stream they will take almost anything. And there is nothing unnatural about a caddis or mayfly laying eggs.

  • it is natural that they lay eggs, but it is unatural that a little fly is swimming upstream in current like that.

  • well then you would know that they will indeed skate up stream alot of the time while laying eggs

  • Interesting
