Wow, I just got my reputation as a walking encyclopedia kicked in the butt, in the most humiliating way!!! The Wedge-Tailed Eagle happens to be my favourite animal and has been for 11 years, and yet I was never aware there was a Tasmanian subspecies with the scientific name Aquila audax fleayi (species is just Aquila audax). Although not extinct this subspecies is certainly heading that way with apparently less than 100 successful breeding pairs a year...
I was under the impression the Wedge-Tailed Eagle was no longer found in Tasmania, only on Australian mainland now. Guess I was wrong if there was a documentary...but I don't think there is a dramatic distinction between Tasmanian Wedge-Tailed Eagle and the mainland variety, certainly not in size. In fact I wasn't even aware they were a subspecies...
land size meant this bird never had a great population...(estimated to have been a few thousand) but it pisses me off that there are no organisations dedicated to protecting them, when they are one of the most threatened animals in the world. This bird is bigger than it's subspecies, and will not breed with the main land eagle, but what the majority think is that we can just bring in some mainland EAGLES!!!
the tasmanian wedge tail eagle is a huge and awesome bird. It needs at least 800 ha of forest. To protect this eagle, logging has to stop. And their food source must not be endangered or the eagle will starve. I have researched eagles almost all my life. it would be a tragic loss if these birds vanished.WE HAVE TO PROTECT THIS EAGLE!!!
The more Tasmania turns green politically, the less chance I will go there in the future!
If in the future it ends up being run bye greenies.....I will never set foot on that part of Australia ever again!
The capitalism grape vine is much bigger than Tasmania!

the difference between the eagle of tasmania and the mainland eagle is that the tas-eagle is more larger and has larger talons.
