Why does a passenger locomotive need AC motors? AC motors are only helpful in low speed, high power applications (heavy trains)

I think New Jersey Transit was thinking ahead when they purchased these locomotives so that they would be able to pull long trains of the new Bombardier Multilevel Cars without issue. Either way, these locomotives sound HOT!!!
