Okinawan systems of Karate, more so than the modern Japanese equivalents like the JKA, have retained more of their combative roots. Te, followed by the earliest forms of Karate, is comprised of just as much grappling, and throwing as it does striking techniques. Good way to keep this is mind is the principles of the hikite (chamber). The general rule is that whenever your hand retreats to chamber, you are pulling something back with it, arm, head, leg, ect ect.

at what level sensei teach students the submissions? when i said submission i mean leg locks, arm bars, chokeholds, etc.

Excuse me I know that in wado ryu you have throws but .. you also have submissions?
or maybe here you are only using techniques from other martial arts?
