Yes, you are. Story mode you're stuck as Roxas (As far as I know, haven't got the actual game yet) but in multiplayer you can be anyone. (Heard somewhere that you had to unlock some of them, not sure if it's true or not.)

yup...you can only play roxas in the story mode but in some missions you will be accompanied by some of the organization members...

and in multiplayer mode you can play with any of the organization 13 members...and you can unlock new characters by increasing your rank and accomplishing some things....

KH 358/2 Days is an in-between game for KH2. Meaning this game's story tells about Roxas's days in the Organization XIII while Sora is still asleep in that cacoon thing. So the game is explaining what happened to Roxas while he was in the Organization XIII.

what made kh get so dark? its like where is there anytime for the wholesome disney classics , even mickey is beyond his fellow disney character peers. xion can wield the keyblade because she is actually sora's clone created by xemnas from sora's memories in the event that sora turned out to be useless to the organiziations plans. roxas battles her in twilight town after she goes completely bat shit insane from finding out she's nothing but an imperfect copy. the strage thing is.. being sora's nobody xion attacks roxas in an attempt ot "absorb him" so she can become whole and " the real sora". roxas lands a fatal blow and she dies peacefully.

Actually, technically, no, your only required maybe 1 or 2, chain of memories didn't really have an impact on anything. Its just between 1 and 2, and you can pick up the story on the way.
