  • @iceybloodspell i first heard this as a jaded teen in a mall. It's up to us to find these beauties however we can

  • Alfred Deller es maravilloso!

  • "Blackadder, BlackAAAADDER!"

  • This isn't "Greensleeves". This is "What Child Is This?" which is just set to the same tune but has different lyrics.

  • @shadetail "Greensleeves" was the original song. They changed the lyrics for "What Child Is This". "Alas my love, you do me wrong, to cast me off discourteously..."

  • this song is way i live today who agrees with me

  • One of the most beautiful pieces I have ever heard, it haunts me. Her voice is sublime. Can anyone give me the artist's names of the paintings?

  • @optimisticautiously

The paintings are by Waterhouse and it's sung by Alfred Deller who is a he not a she by the way. He sings in counter tenor which is very high.

  • @TheSealOfTheRose Wow, I totally missed that one! Thanks for clearing it up. Regardless, a truly beautiful voice. Can't believe it's a man! Thanks :)

  • @optimisticautiously alfred deller is a countertenor. this beautiful vocal range can only be surpassed by castrati, young men who'd been castrated before puberty and trained to sing. Their lung capacity was much greater than a woman's

  • Não tem como não se emocionar ouvindo algo tão lindo.

  • What a great moment...one word : fantastic! Thank you for this uplaod.

  • this is a poem put to the music of "green sleeves," an olde english melody known since at least the time of Shakespeare.

  • @Justen1980 This tune was around before Henry VIII,and was the top selling manuscript music for 150 years!!!!!!!!! Some chance todays` electronic manufactured noise lasting one hundredth of that time.

  • 3. And now with New-Year's gifts each friend unto each other they who send

God grant we may all our lives amend, and that the truth may appear.

Now- like the snake- your skin cast off of evil thoughts and sin

And so the year begin- God send us a happy New Year!

  • 2. The name-day now of Christ we keep, Who for our sins did often weep

His hands and feet were wounded deep and His blessed side with a spear

His head they crowned with thorn, and at him they did laugh and scorn

Who for our good was born; God send us a happy New Year!

  • The olde Year now away is fled

    1. The old year now away is fled, the new year it is entered

Then let us now our sins downtread, and joyfully all appear

Let's merry be this day and let us love of sport and play

Hang grief! Cast care away! God send you a happy New Year!

  • this is my favorite i always play greensleeves on my violin is is so very wonderful and the best part about this 1 video is tht out of the small 142 people tht rated it, none of them disliked it :)

  • is this in english or a different language? I cant quite understand

  • @pitbikecrazy Ya, this is english, listen carefully.

  • @pitbikecrazy Yes, it's English. Perhaps the pitch of his voice makes it hard for your hear it.

  • @pitbikecrazy Just noticed- Justen1980 above has given us the verses.

  • @pitbikecrazy

The reason you might have trouble understanding it is because your mind is looking for certain words such as "Greensleeves was all my joy". But this is not "Greensleeves", if you listen closely you will figure out it is english but its a song about Jesus.

  • This tune was a best seller before Henry VIII was born.It was the top selling manuscript music for the best part of 150 years.Makes the top ten look transient!!!

  • I wonder to read the lyrics!! somebody can do me this great favor? Thanks very much.

  • @franco96544 I've posted lyrics for everyone to enjoy!

  • Glorious

  • This song introduced me to the music of Renaissance.. Wonderful interpretation by Deller! Thanks for sharing !

  • Does anyone have the text?

  • The most beautiful performance of this wonderful folk song, I dare to say!

  • Nice sound, Scholls does a great version too .

  • Alfred Deller reste unique et irremplaçable.

Belle symbiose entre la peinture de Waterhouse, et la musique. Bravo

  • is this song for the renaissance?

  • supposedly Henry VIII composed it for Anne

  • in the end, is this song a popular 1, composed by Henry Tudor or by whon? Seems nobody knows it clearly

  • No one knows who composed Greensleeves but it was composed in Tudor times - anonymously!

  • @NiallMS I heard it was Henry VIIII who composed it.

  • @TheEmpress666 He probably put his name to it, the way he did with some other works!

  • As good a rendition of Greensleeves as any!

  • this music cant be of this world.its holy music.like God composed it.through thus parts u can believe and hope to paradise in our dirty wolrd.

  • His intonation is fantastic!

  • Absolutely. I have just discovered Deller and am astonished at his truly superb interpretation of the text. I don't know if other counter-tenors sing in this tradition or if he's unique, but this is a magnificent union of text and music.

  • Yes I think he was unique! (died 1979).

  • Is his son still singing?

  • Strange... I never heard this version of lyrics. Who wrote it?

btw, there's a spelling mistake in the title ;)

  • This was a poem written by king Henry VIII of England, in the XVI century.

  • "Anon", the most prolific composer of all, wrote it!

  • Thank you- I have never heard these lyrics before.

  • Amazing Alfred R.I.P.

Such a magnificent Canterbury voice !

  • Estas hojas verdes,es una canción popular.Muy hermosa.Las bellas canciones nunca mueren..,

  • It's a shame he sang the modernized version instead of the original modal version.

  • SNICKERS COMMERCIAL

  • This would get more hits if 'Greensleeves' was spelled correctly! :)

  • amazing voice!

  • Deller cannot be matched to anyone. His voice is a permanent miracle.

  • I ahve always ctears on my eyes when listening this marvel. And i am a 37 y.o. male...
