I love Schutt helmets, ive been using them the last 2 years of high school, and im gonna buy my own Ion 4d this upcoming year! I was just wondering about where can i get a facemask like Justin Tucks new one? Is there like a website or store?
@eh335 That's great! We really love to hear stories like that. As far as Tuck's faceguard, it's a custom design, made just for him. So, we can't make his mask for you but we can make custom masks. The thing is, they're really expensive - to the tune of $300-$400. So, most of the time, they're limited to the pros.
@will998867 Obviously, our answer is going to be yes. But the best helmet is the one that fits YOU the best. To directly compare the ION to the X1, go to the Schutt Vs video that compares the two helmets directly.
@azsface504 That's great! Thanks for trusting us with your helmet choice. The ION 4D now comes standard with a 4 point high hook up. It can be drilled for a low hookup or the "through the facemask" hookup if you prefer that.
Just a suggestion, If the Ion design extends the jaw protection area a litte bit more, and is made a tad bit lighter, possibly by adding a lighter facemask, it would go unmatched.
@RCwinsit In terms of lightweight facemasks, the titanium faceguards are the way to go for the ION. We're always looking for ways to make the helmets lighter without sacrificing performance. As far as side protection goes - we got into trouble the last time we didn't extend jaw protection on the helmet. In all seriousness, we re-designed the ION helmet shell in response to the loss of a lawsuit brought by Riddell. A big point in the trial was the "extended" jaw protection of our first design.

@danmohajBOOYAH Last summer we re-designed the helmet shell of the ION4D, specifically that portion of the ear flap to more closely resemble the AiR XP shell. The angular helmet in this video is the first edition. The rounded edge is the 2nd edition.
@12deerhunter12 the speed is just a new shell design inserted with more cheap foam....it's got the same padding from the revo helmet, i honestly thought the speed was good, but i tried one of these and they are extremely comfortable and i don't get severe headaches every time i hit unlike with the speed.....

@PvMcris Either helmet will be great for you. The ION4D fits a little smaller than the DNA Pro+. They both feature our TPU Cushioning and SUREFIT ventilated Air Liner. So they'll be equally comfortable. The key to not tearing your ears off is to have the helmet fit properly on you and to use the ear holes to put the helmet on and take it off. You won't regret either helmet but we think the DNA Pro+ is our best combination of performance and price.

@NakNak91 The DNA helmets fit a little bit bigger than the IONs, so if you were in a large - but sort of at the upper end of, if you know what we mean - you probably want to consider the X-Large ION. The best way to do this is to try on the helmets but we know that's not always feasible.

@UtterPwnage Sorry - we didn't see your question until just now. There's virtually no difference on the interior of the helmets - where the TPU Cushioning is. They're both large stand off helmets but the ION features a the Energy Wedge faceguard - which acts as a shock absorber for the helmet. And, obviously, the helmet designs are different.
is it possible i can get or order the new nose bumber without reconditioning my helmet because i dont like how the old nose bumper makes my facemask sticks farther out of the helmet then the new nose bumper does
@mubashargangsta We can only tell you that the Schutt Optics Eye Shield will fit that helmet for certain. Since no other manufacturer makes a visor specifically for the ION4D, we can't really recommend any of them or tell you that they'll fit. THBS, if you look on our social media channels (YouTube and Facebook) or just do a Google search, you'll find lots of guys who've been able to do what you need to do and they're usually willing to help.
@mubashargangsta Sorry - didn't see your question until now. We would recommend the Schutt Optics Eye Shield - we know that one fits the ION4D. Since no other visor has been specifically designed to fit the ION4D we can't recommend any of them. Hey SchuttSports, I'm in a real tough spot. I'm in a cross whether to get Revo Speed and the Ion 4d. I know that since you are of course an individual within Schutt, you would answer the Ion 4d. It's just that from so many reviews and suggestions between the two helmets, so many more people have recommended the Riddell Revolution Speed. I need to decide what helmet to get in about 2 days. @UtterPwnage I guess it all depends on your perspective. We see about the same # of people recc'ing the ION as the Speed. Of course, we think the ION is better. For all the reasons why, we encourage you to watch the VS video here on our YouTube channel comparing the ION 4D to the Speed. The Speed is a decent helmet but the ION is better and the video will explain why.
@football317317317 Not really, except to make the ION nose bumper mirror traditional nose bumpers - which may make it easier to work with. It doesn't affect performance of the helmet in any way.
Hey I got my ion 4d and it didn't have the new nose bumper it had the old one that has those two plastic things hold the facemask in place why's that??
@football317317317 The helmet likely came from a dealer's existing inventory, which may have had the old style nose bumper on it. When the helmet is reconditioned, you can ask to have the nose bumper updated.
The Ion 4D does not include a facemask, correct? Sites that i want to buy it from are costing 50 to another 200 dollars. This seems really expensive considering the helmet is almost 300 itself. Making it more expensive from the riddell 360 that may or may not be better?
@unBALLievable Let us know where you are looking online? The ION4D should be about $300, including a facemask. Without a mask, it should be about $260.
@am7ip They were a late season addition to the helmet makeup. You can buy the TPU jaw pads by themselves or you can have the regular jaw pads replaced with TPU during the reconditioning process.
@SchuttSports Ok , so how much would a paint job cost for my helmet? because football america is having a sale on an ion 4d for 160 $ but in a different color. @93Dwightfreeney I've never had an x1 or ownes anybody who does so that should say something.. haha but I did learn that those absorb much less impact than ions. ions are the safest bet and they just look b.a.

@21bryan1 Yes. All new ION 4D helmets are now produced with the AiR Maxx TPU Jaw Pads. Older models already on the field can be upgraded to them thru reconditioning. All IONs come standard with the 4pt High Hook Up.. but the lower hook up can be drilled if you prefer that.

@manishmanify We can match any color you need. Odds are pretty good that if your school has any Schutt helmets now, we already have the color mixture. The best thing to do is find the local Schutt dealer your school works with and order the helmet through him, with the correct color ordered.
i have tried the the revolutions and the xeinth x1.. those dont help me at all. I have tried on this helmet and it is so comfertable i am getting this helmet!

@ThePortugueseAnimal The biggest difference between the two helmet versions are the upgraded accessories in the new (2011) ION 4D: Quarter Turn Release System on the facemask, AiR Maxx TPU Jaw Pads and the ION Hard Cup chin strap. The TPU inside is the same and so is the shell. But, there is an XL size available for the ION 4D now.

@2468booyah If you're between sizes in helmets, always start with the smallest size first and see if that can be fitted properly on you. At 7 1/4, you're more than likely in a size large but make sure. As a QB, we'd recommend going with any of the ROPO style masks or any of the EGOP style masks.

I was wondering, Im 15 playing gridiron in australia and I am looking at buying a ION 4D
Now the sizes are the same for youth and adult so I wanted to know what is the difference and which would you recomend?? (In a league that involves 14 - 18 year olds)
Well, you'll want to be as light as possible to maximize speed (and the facemask is a big part of the helmet's weight). We'd rec something in the ROPO family or EGOP family. These also have the fewest vertical support bars which gives you a clearer field of vision. From, there it's really your personal preference. You can see them all on our website.
@52xxBeast Well, he's wearing a Revo, for one thing. But, no we don't think so. It doesn't offer enough lower (jaw) protection, for one thing and the protection along the nose and eyes is a little lacking - could use a U-Bar maybe.
@65raidernation It really depends on your particular style of play and what you like. Usually a lineman of any type will want to have as much protection as possible, even though that means a heavier facemask. That includes the U-Bar, a double-wire style and extra jaw protection. We'd recommend any of these: EGJOP, RJOP, RJOP-DW, RJOP-UB-DW or RJOP-UB. You can see all of these masks on our website. The choice is really up to you. @skullbreaker7 The $300 cost includes the facemask. It will be more only if you want a titanium facemask, which is more expensive than the carbon steel faceguard for the ION 4D.

@ shortsop272: All of our varsity helmets are great for any position, including RB. Usually what changes are the style of faceguard. For an RB, I'd recommend either the ROPO or EGOP family of guards.
As far as comparing it to the Revo, there's no question the ION 4D is a better helmet. The TPU Cushioning inside the ION 4D is light year's ahead of the foam padding in the Revo. The Revo absorbs 25% less impact in game-like conditions than the ION 4D. Better heat management in ION 4D, also.
Virtually all major brands of face shields will fit on the DNA Recruit but there will be a gap on each side of the shield. The DNA helmet shell is a large standoff helmet shell, so the faceguards have to be made wider. Because of that, there will be a small gap on each side, near the faceguard.
I'm curious about the Skydex 2 used in these helmets. I've seen two types used in the Ion 4d. One is identical to the Skydex used in the DNA Pro+ (shown in this video, more 'tubular'), and the other looks more like the old Skydex that uses the half-hemispheres, but blue instead. Can you compare and contrast the features of these two types of Skydex? Thanks!!

I got one a couple days ago to go with my schutt air flex shoulder pads you dont feel anything someone could sledgehammer your head and it wouldnt hurt a bit.
@apl2217: You'll want to use a 1/4" drill bit to drill the hold and then install the chin strap snaps. The helmet is dimpled in the two spots to drill the hole. Good luck and thanks for choosing Schutt gear.
i have an older version of the schutt ion 4d and it doesnt have the holes for the high hook-up. so im wondering what size drill bit to use and does it voids any warranty
@ CDawkinz: Since there are no manufacturers currently who make a visor specifically for the ION 4D, we can't recommend doing it. That having been said, there are a ton of people here on YT and over on our facebook page who have done it, including Penn State. They're usually very willing to show you how they did it.

So my gear finally arrived today, and I'll say my XV Shoulder pads are amazing. Comfortable and Light. But my Large ION 4D helmet was a bit tight. I didnt know you had a XL size. I honestly think that Im going to be very Satisfied with an XL ION 4D.
Actually, the study done by the University of Pitt Medical Center states that large-standoff helmets LIKE the Revo lower the risk of concussion by 30% or more. The DNA Pro is a large standoff helmet and was available for that study, but because it was funded by Riddell, they saw fit to not include the DNA in the study.
Go with the ION 4D. The TPU Cushioning absorbs way more impact than the old traditional foam padding in the Revo/Speed in game-like conditions. And it's way more comfortable.
@ chsthewall: We're sorry about the delay in receiving your helmet and shoulder pads. This is the absolute craziest time of the year for us, so I'm sure it's in the pipeline. I know that doesn't help you, though. The best thing we can recommend is to contact the dealer/store you bought it from and see if they can track it for you. Since we don't sell direct, we have no way of tracking individual purchases.

@littleEdog: The ION 4D is a large offset helmet, just like the DNA Pro+, but its profile is quite a bit different than the DNA. So, no, you won't get that bobblehead effect that some guys talk about.
@ Hamstercheck: Any player on the field can wear the ION 4D, even the soft WRs. :-) Seriously, the ION 4D is our top-of-the-line helmet and offers you the best performance for the money. We can't help you with other players laughing at you though. But, our guess is - you'll get the last laugh when all they'll see of you is the back bumper with "S C H U T T" on it.
hey i got a question... would you advice the schutt ion 4D to a WR/CB? or is it to heavy etc for those positions... because a buddy of me told me that the ion 4d isn't good for WRs and that they will laugh about me if I wear a Ion as WRs
I heard that Schutt is in serious legal trouble for violating a bunch of Riddell patents...I don't care if that's true or not, all I know is Riddell's Speed helmet will kick this helmet's ass.
In regards to attaching a visor to the ION, read the post below and also make sure you check out a comment by "Luck Fullback" on our facebook page. He may be able to provide you with some insight on the visor. Be sure to scroll down a little because the post was in March.
@22suarez22 Currently, Schutt Sports does not make a visor for the Schutt ION4D. We know of no other company that makes a visor that fits an Schutt ION4D without alteration. We have seen some Schutt ION4D helmets with visors installed. To the best of our knowledge, those visors have been modified by their users, not by the visor manufacturers, to fit the Schutt ION4D. We do not recommend altering a manufacturers product to fit the Schutt ION4D.

@mubashargangsta We can only tell you that the Schutt Optics Eye Shield will fit that helmet for certain. Since no other manufacturer makes a visor specifically for the ION4D, we can't really recommend any of them or tell you that they'll fit. THBS, if you look on our social media channels (YouTube and Facebook) or just do a Google search, you'll find lots of guys who've been able to do what you need to do and they're usually willing to help.

Hey SchuttSports, I'm in a real tough spot. I'm in a cross whether to get Revo Speed and the Ion 4d. I know that since you are of course an individual within Schutt, you would answer the Ion 4d. It's just that from so many reviews and suggestions between the two helmets, so many more people have recommended the Riddell Revolution Speed. I need to decide what helmet to get in about 2 days. @UtterPwnage I guess it all depends on your perspective. We see about the same # of people recc'ing the ION as the Speed. Of course, we think the ION is better. For all the reasons why, we encourage you to watch the VS video here on our YouTube channel comparing the ION 4D to the Speed. The Speed is a decent helmet but the ION is better and the video will explain why.

@football317317317 The helmet likely came from a dealer's existing inventory, which may have had the old style nose bumper on it. When the helmet is reconditioned, you can ask to have the nose bumper updated.

The Ion 4D does not include a facemask, correct? Sites that i want to buy it from are costing 50 to another 200 dollars. This seems really expensive considering the helmet is almost 300 itself. Making it more expensive from the riddell 360 that may or may not be better?

@am7ip They were a late season addition to the helmet makeup. You can buy the TPU jaw pads by themselves or you can have the regular jaw pads replaced with TPU during the reconditioning process.

@21bryan1 Yes. All new ION 4D helmets are now produced with the AiR Maxx TPU Jaw Pads. Older models already on the field can be upgraded to them thru reconditioning. All IONs come standard with the 4pt High Hook Up.. but the lower hook up can be drilled if you prefer that.

@manishmanify We can match any color you need. Odds are pretty good that if your school has any Schutt helmets now, we already have the color mixture. The best thing to do is find the local Schutt dealer your school works with and order the helmet through him, with the correct color ordered.

@ThePortugueseAnimal The biggest difference between the two helmet versions are the upgraded accessories in the new (2011) ION 4D: Quarter Turn Release System on the facemask, AiR Maxx TPU Jaw Pads and the ION Hard Cup chin strap. The TPU inside is the same and so is the shell. But, there is an XL size available for the ION 4D now.

Hey schutt ur helmets are awesome and blow riddel away! I played with the ridell revolution in pop warner but switched to the dna pro and it blew it away! @2468booyah If you're between sizes in helmets, always start with the smallest size first and see if that can be fitted properly on you. At 7 1/4, you're more than likely in a size large but make sure. As a QB, we'd recommend going with any of the ROPO style masks or any of the EGOP style masks.

Now the sizes are the same for youth and adult so I wanted to know what is the difference and which would you recomend?? (In a league that involves 14 - 18 year olds)

Well, you'll want to be as light as possible to maximize speed (and the facemask is a big part of the helmet's weight). We'd rec something in the ROPO family or EGOP family. These also have the fewest vertical support bars which gives you a clearer field of vision. From, there it's really your personal preference. You can see them all on our website.

@52xxBeast Well, he's wearing a Revo, for one thing. But, no we don't think so. It doesn't offer enough lower (jaw) protection, for one thing and the protection along the nose and eyes is a little lacking - could use a U-Bar maybe.

@65raidernation It really depends on your particular style of play and what you like. Usually a lineman of any type will want to have as much protection as possible, even though that means a heavier facemask. That includes the U-Bar, a double-wire style and extra jaw protection. We'd recommend any of these: EGJOP, RJOP, RJOP-DW, RJOP-UB-DW or RJOP-UB. You can see all of these masks on our website. The choice is really up to you. The ION 4D features thermoplastic uretheane (TPU) Cushioning, which is proven to perform significantly better in game-like conditions than either the Speed or X1. In fact, test results from an independent research lab show that the X1 absorbs 42% less impact and the Speed 12% less impact in game-like conditions.

@ shortsop272: All of our varsity helmets are great for any position, including RB. Usually what changes are the style of faceguard. For an RB, I'd recommend either the ROPO or EGOP family of guards.
As far as comparing it to the Revo, there's no question the ION 4D is a better helmet. The TPU Cushioning inside the ION 4D is light year's ahead of the foam padding in the Revo. The Revo absorbs 25% less impact in game-like conditions than the ION 4D. Better heat management in ION 4D, also.

Virtually all major brands of face shields will fit on the DNA Recruit but there will be a gap on each side of the shield. The DNA helmet shell is a large standoff helmet shell, so the faceguards have to be made wider. Because of that, there will be a small gap on each side, near the faceguard.

I'm curious about the Skydex 2 used in these helmets. I've seen two types used in the Ion 4d. One is identical to the Skydex used in the DNA Pro+ (shown in this video, more 'tubular'), and the other looks more like the old Skydex that uses the half-hemispheres, but blue instead. Can you compare and contrast the features of these two types of Skydex? Thanks!!

@apl2217: You'll want to use a 1/4" drill bit to drill the hold and then install the chin strap snaps. The helmet is dimpled in the two spots to drill the hole. Good luck and thanks for choosing Schutt gear.

@ CDawkinz: Since there are no manufacturers currently who make a visor specifically for the ION 4D, we can't recommend doing it. That having been said, there are a ton of people here on YT and over on our facebook page who have done it, including Penn State. They're usually very willing to show you how they did it.

So my gear finally arrived today, and I'll say my XV Shoulder pads are amazing. Comfortable and Light. But my Large ION 4D helmet was a bit tight. I didnt know you had a XL size. I honestly think that Im going to be very Satisfied with an XL ION 4D.
If Delivery was faster, it would be perfect.

Actually, the study done by the University of Pitt Medical Center states that large-standoff helmets LIKE the Revo lower the risk of concussion by 30% or more. The DNA Pro is a large standoff helmet and was available for that study, but because it was funded by Riddell, they saw fit to not include the DNA in the study.
Go with the ION 4D. The TPU Cushioning absorbs way more impact than the old traditional foam padding in the Revo/Speed in game-like conditions. And it's way more comfortable.

@ chsthewall: We're sorry about the delay in receiving your helmet and shoulder pads. This is the absolute craziest time of the year for us, so I'm sure it's in the pipeline. I know that doesn't help you, though. The best thing we can recommend is to contact the dealer/store you bought it from and see if they can track it for you. Since we don't sell direct, we have no way of tracking individual purchases.

@littleEdog: The ION 4D is a large offset helmet, just like the DNA Pro+, but its profile is quite a bit different than the DNA. So, no, you won't get that bobblehead effect that some guys talk about.

We can't help you with other players laughing at you though. But, our guess is - you'll get the last laugh when all they'll see of you is the back bumper with "S C H U T T" on it.

@22suarez22 Currently, Schutt Sports does not make a visor for the Schutt ION4D. We know of no other company that makes a visor that fits an Schutt ION4D without alteration. We have seen some Schutt ION4D helmets with visors installed. To the best of our knowledge, those visors have been modified by their users, not by the visor manufacturers, to fit the Schutt ION4D. We do not recommend altering a manufacturers product to fit the Schutt ION4D.
