Someone once said, "it's just a sport. Neither fighter wants to hurt the other in the ring." Probably usually true, but this staredown suggests not always.
What is so great about this win for Hearns after his stable mate had already beat this guy? And honestly i didn't think it made any sense for Hearns to ever go back down to 154 again to fight Medal.
In a short period of time Hearns went from 160 to 154 up to 175 and back to 160.
Maybe after beating Roldan Tommy should have moved up and never fought Barkley.
this is 1 of those fights that should never have been made...a punching bag in dewitt that could get beat on all day and a master boxer like hearns...always wanted to see hearns fight holyfield....that woulda been a classic...
@HugoRune1976 he's still in goood shape too...i would love to see larry holmes beat the shit out of chris arreola...that guy is a joke...someone should tell him that there's no crying in boxing...
@The7thSunSon ///After the shuler fight ..Shuler died in a accident and tommy gave his family the belt that there son had held....Try to know what your talking about before making a fool of yourself,Tommy is the best of the boxers in and out of the ring,,This kid deserved a chance..He just could'nt get it done
hearns would have destroyed mayweather, cotto, de la hoya and toney. i really rate the other fighters, but hearns's jab is like opening a letter bomb. not only that but that destructive right, jesus!
You are right! Hearns would've taken PBF, Cotto, and DLH out! I think Toney, who is quite skilled and a true student of the game, would've given Tommy a helluva fight, though. Of course, Tommy was one of James' biggest inspirations. James has the moves of Jersey Joe, and I love that about him. However, he probably would've come in out of shape, and you know Tommy was always in shape and very professional. Ergo, Tommy would've taken it.
Fuck Toney, all he could do was counterpunch! Hearns woulda destroyed him pretty quickly with his monster right hand. Jones pissed at Toney, so would Hearns!
@AndyHR2 I feel the same way about Dewitt- He may have had the greatest chin in boxing history not to mention he was always game against the greatest MW's of all time and he put up great fights against them.

@HugoRune1976 hearns vs holyfield? maybe hearns should take a tune up in say....hopkins?
jezelljr 1 year ago
@jezelljr Let's be honest here, It's not that much of a stretch for a 50+ Hearns to decide he wants another go.
Boxers do this to themselves all the time

Tommy was the king of staredowns. Watch any of his big fights and he stared the guy down. Him and Benitez was all up in each other grills
stell29 3 years ago
Benitez and Leonard was also an all-time stare-down. From stare down perspective, Hearns-Benitez was a great matchup.
nportillo73 3 years ago
Yeah, Tommy had a hell of a stare. Hagler, though, was having none of that nonsense when they got together :D

man now thats a staredown lol

Hearns was so popular. Maybe as popular as Sugar Ray. Certainly more than Hagler.
