WOOOOO HOOOOOO!!! I loved those days, and I just read SF is back in August! Any of my Long Island Sound fleet buddies out there??? john gogol 18264 here! 1978-82 miss my pals Chris Lent, Mark Page and my instructors, god the parties were great!! I'm windsurfing the gorge in Oregon, since 89, nuclear winds every day, huge air!!!
@xxololcrap (im imamnotaemo just changed my acount) one they rnt sailing with full rigs two i sail 29ers. ive sailed a 29er in 35 knots raceing and havent capsized as much as these guyz do and i know its slalom which is different. but still. and yes i hav sailed a full rig laser in these kinds of winds b4. i must admit though my comment was childish. what i should have said is wow the laser techniques have changed alot since those days

Wow--so much fun to see this movie! I distinctly remember the press about that race when I was a kid--it was very inspiring. There was a great photo in SAIL back then--in an ad, or a story, can't remember--taken during that race. I never knew about this movie. On the other hand and tangential to this point, I used to watch all of John Biddle's movies--they were fun!
before the Radial, was the ugly-ass rolled reef. (I still do this, just got to remember to leave out the top batten) The real trick is reefing it out on the water.
This video has great music. The first track played is Grand Funk Railroad -- I do know that. But who's playing guitar on the second track that plays? I'm very curious -- it's really good.
yeah the most wind ive sailed a laser in has been about 16 knots and i weigh 87pounds lol also older lasers that are taken care of are accually faster than the ones made today
Ummm if they are faster and the builders know they are faster then why dont they build them like they did back then? How come I never seen any old boats at the laser worlds? Think about it...
Wow! It's really interesting to see heavy wind sailing before they developed a lot of the newer techniques. I've raced in 40kts, in an unreefed full rig weighing 97 lbs... Not going to lie, I spent most of the regatta swimming.
I've sailed keelboats and dinghies - dinghies are a lot harder. Keeping the plastic under the metal downwind in a Laser in any sort of breeze is a balancing act that often fails. I suspect you've never tried it.
Keelboats have different problems - usually to do with keeping awake on long night watches and trying to keep warm when wet for days.
premton is a kid--he is a starry-eyed worshipper of the Volvo--in the same way that we were worshippers of the 5o5 and the Laser back then...he'll figure it out :-)
Love this jibe at 1:50!!!

OK...forgive me for the unnecessary question...I just noticed that the video indicates at the end who the guitarist is.

The old lasers are not. thats a myth and a bad one at that. I sailed a full rig at 145 LBS at gusts 60 mph. Not that hard but fun as anything.

Some of the older boats are faster. The canadian built boats with sail numbers near 13xxxx were built stiffer than vanguards are build now.

What a classic. I had this video when I was a kid and it was always a hit on those rainy sailing camp days.
I love the high tech sailing clothes...jeans and sweatshirt with gofast headband.
