  • Love this jibe at 1:50!!!

  • I love the roll reefed sails... anyone here ever tried that? its not fun. also the 4 digit sail numbers are sweet 182416 right here!

  • WOOOOO HOOOOOO!!! I loved those days, and I just read SF is back in August! Any of my Long Island Sound fleet buddies out there??? john gogol 18264 here! 1978-82 miss my pals Chris Lent, Mark Page and my instructors, god the parties were great!! I'm windsurfing the gorge in Oregon, since 89, nuclear winds every day, huge air!!!

  • lamnotaemo,id like to see u try and sail in 40 knots of wind in a full rig. it would be funny to see wat happens.

  • @xxololcrap (im imamnotaemo just changed my acount) one they rnt sailing with full rigs two i sail 29ers. ive sailed a 29er in 35 knots raceing and havent capsized as much as these guyz do and i know its slalom which is different. but still. and yes i hav sailed a full rig laser in these kinds of winds b4. i must admit though my comment was childish. what i should have said is wow the laser techniques have changed alot since those days

  • i like the way they reduced sail area, might try that next time my local club race is over 25kts

  • These guys really really really suck

  • @Iamnotaemo how often have you sailed in laser in those winds, with normal sails?

  • @Iamnotaemo no they didn't. tactics were a lot different then. lets see u try this!

  • Great Video!

  • Wow--so much fun to see this movie! I distinctly remember the press about that race when I was a kid--it was very inspiring. There was a great photo in SAIL back then--in an ad, or a story, can't remember--taken during that race. I never knew about this movie. On the other hand and tangential to this point, I used to watch all of John Biddle's movies--they were fun!

  • great movie

  • before the Radial, was the ugly-ass rolled reef. (I still do this, just got to remember to leave out the top batten) The real trick is reefing it out on the water.

  • run for your life by robert randolph and the family band

  • I like the music. And also the vid is AWESOME!!!

it's my 2nd favorite laser video.

  • I was on the bay that day and enjoyed the show. But in this video.....the music is horrible!

  • OK...forgive me for the unnecessary question...I just noticed that the video indicates at the end who the guitarist is.

  • This video has great music. The first track played is Grand Funk Railroad -- I do know that. But who's playing guitar on the second track that plays? I'm very curious -- it's really good.

  • my sail number starts with 13... 136283.. soo my boat is canadian!?

    xx

  • those are uber reefed, ive only ever reefed one or twice around the mast, these guys..... doing it 4.7 style lol

  • <3 i love this video xD

  • so this is how they came up with 4.7 sails

  • Looks like Raphael Nadal at 1:56

  • Wow amazing... I was out today in gusts of 30-40 knots and near shat myself. (Was glad to get back in, wasnt constant wind) These guys are good.

  • that looks like a blast but EXTREMLY hard

  • wow. much wind ;)

  • 40 knots 0:20

  • yeah, i know.

  • intense. looks awesome.

  • Awesome Video.

    Reefed sails

    Difficult conditions...yet fanatastic sailing!

    Love it

  • This is awesome.. things have changed with laser sailing .

  • this is old school sailing! good!

  • never mind a radial or a 4.7....lets reef an old sail...that's how i learnt...superb!

  • ya this music has some pretty cool history to it and 50 years from now when we have fully carbon boats

canvered kevlar sails and boats we will say wow those guys are crazy lol woops we already have those hehe

    sweet video

  • yeah the most wind ive sailed a laser in has been about 16 knots and i weigh 87pounds lol also older lasers that are taken care of are accually faster than the ones made today

  • The old lasers are not. thats a myth and a bad one at that. I sailed a full rig at 145 LBS at gusts 60 mph. Not that hard but fun as anything.

  • Some of the older boats are faster. The canadian built boats with sail numbers near 13xxxx were built stiffer than vanguards are build now.

  • Ummm if they are faster and the builders know they are faster then why dont they build them like they did back then? How come I never seen any old boats at the laser worlds? Think about it...

  • Wow! It's really interesting to see heavy wind sailing before they developed a lot of the newer techniques. I've raced in 40kts, in an unreefed full rig weighing 97 lbs... Not going to lie, I spent most of the regatta swimming.

  • great! love it!

  • Great jumpin' jibes!!!

  • What a classic. I had this video when I was a kid and it was always a hit on those rainy sailing camp days.

I love the high tech sailing clothes...jeans and sweatshirt with gofast headband.

  • Hi Thanks

Till today this movie is a hit...no wind = slalom laser and everybody love this movie

    ;0)

  • wow

it's very interesting to see how the laser equipment was 30 years ago

    there ise a huge differance

    great video

  • Great haircuts!

  • Great footage in some pretty impressive conditions. I would have appreciated hearing the original sound all the way thru for historical purposes.

  • Looks like some of them were reefed into the sail numbers - must be why they have numbers on their shirts!

  • premton this is classic laser sailing history..dinghy sailors will find this video very intresting

  • nothing special....vovlo ocean race or maxi videos are way better

  • I've sailed keelboats and dinghies - dinghies are a lot harder. Keeping the plastic under the metal downwind in a Laser in any sort of breeze is a balancing act that often fails. I suspect you've never tried it.

Keelboats have different problems - usually to do with keeping awake on long night watches and trying to keep warm when wet for days.

    Great video - thanks

  • Have you any idea how hard laser sailing is in 40kts of wind compared to volvo ocean racing?

  • its very different

  • premton is a kid--he is a starry-eyed worshipper of the Volvo--in the same way that we were worshippers of the 5o5 and the Laser back then...he'll figure it out :-)

  • Very good video josepinho
