  • You poked a pen thru those targets, I know your game ; ) n0000b!

  • @phrankus2009 The 'ping' noise does say that the Garand is out, but you try listening for that in the heat of a battle. The mag ejection trick would probably only work in small group engagements. It's a feasible story, but not for large-scale fighting.

  • Do you think it would be a wise project to sporterize an M1 Garand?

  • PING !! ... Gotta love that sound ! ... I read some story about how the enemy learned that "ping" meant we were "out" and reloading, so they would (sometimes) charge when they heard that sound and, this one guy said that he would keep empty clips on and and throw them down, before he actually ran out of ammo ... said it worked well. ... You can purchase match-tuned Garrands from places like Fulton Armory (used to be able to, anyway) and those rigs are guaranteed under 1MOA, with decent ammo.

  • @phrankus2009 The ping alerting enemies is just a myth.

  • Greek 150 Gr. Ball????

  • My favorite load is 44grains of Varget with 168 Sierra Matchking and winchester standard primer.

  • M1 Garand rules!

  • No bullshit ! It takes a good rifleman to do that, rock on brother !

  • hey were did you hold on ur sights

did u aim below it or tip of post is were it hits hold?

  • Comment removed

  • The 4" acceptance groups are to be from certified ammo and from a machine rest. So most likely a 5" shooting rifle fired by a human with any ole decent ammo would be well under 4" when in a machine rest and using test barrel certified ammo.

  • The M1 Garand is actually pretty hard to get use to.

  • @treasuredroperX I got used to mine in about 3 weeks

  • @LoneWolf051 Mine took about 2 weeks. You ever use the 1911 or M1903?

  • @treasuredroperX Yeah I've had my 1903 for about 9 years, and my M1911 for about 5 years

  • how really accurate is this gun? 1 MOA? wanna get one and would love some info on this gun.. thanks guys!

  • Is Greek Ball 30-06 ammo corrosive?

  • Im so proud to be Greek.

My father used this type of ammo in his M1 when he was serving in Greek army

  • Bottom Line if you buy a rack grade be prepared to put some money into it. I have purchased 1 rack grade and 1 special grade (both bought from CMP) after all was said and done i had a $1000 in the rack grade to make it into a john c garand match gun. Next time i bought one at the Cmp bought the Special and it came with a nice leather sling! so $1000 either way!!! These guns are capable of between1 and 2 minutes of angle with a little tweaking and some handloading!

  • @MrBobagrigg

No more Rack Grades are being offered. The lowest is now the Field Grade. According to the CMP the shipments that came from the Greeks had much better rifles. Other rifles are being re worked into the CMP specials.

The SG rifle right now are real sweet!

  • one person is not american

  • thanks for your videos and your service!

  • Looking forward to the hand loads and look at the head spacing on you rifel let me know what you have their! Thanks

  • Be very carefull of the Dunhams M-1's i they still sell them the headspacing was NOT checked on one of mine and had a run away thankfullys was just firing blanks at a re-enactment but detroyed the Firing pin and the exctractor...had to take it to a gun smith to be checked AFTER Dunhams told me O yeah these are perfectly safe to fire right out the box

  • The Field Grade rating the CMP gives a rifle has nothing to do with its parts mix. I have bought a 100% correct parts matching 3.3M from the CMP before that was a Field Grade. Field Grade means the chamber gauges good for Service Grade but the muzzle does not.

  • Don't you just love that last round? *PING!*

  • is it very uncomfortable to fire fast? i know it is very inaccurate but is that the only reason you dont show it? i wanna see the M1 garand like in the movies :D

  • @PhilipBS2000 Yeah, I shot one. I'm just your average joe and shooting one round kicks you back a bit and it hurts.

  • When you get as old as me,you'll be putting a pad on your shoulder to cut down the recoil.Love the .30/06,though. Always will be one of the best rounds to ever come down the pike.

  • In response to kp7100, Garands were designed to operate with 150 to 172gr bullets at 2600 to 2750 or so fps muzzle velocity with a moderate burning rate powder. It is not advisable to shoot modern factory ammo as much of it exceeds the design pressure and many use slow burning powders both of which raise the port pressure to a point that it batters the action and can bend the operating rod. Best to use mil-surp or modern ammo specifically designed for the Garand.

  • I recently lent my Garand to a newbie shooter (who owns an M-1 carbine). I gave him a full 8 round clip of surplus European 30-06 ball ammo and let him have at it. He said that one of the sweetest sounds he loves to hear is that distinctively American "PIIIIING!" at the end of the firing. Goodnight, John C. Garand, whereever you are.

  • can this rifle penetrate body armour?

  • how long does it take to receive mmo from cmp i just ordered some today.

  • couldnt help but realize that your hat says iraq veteran and want to say thanks for your service. Great rifle btw except that creeping on the trigger.

  • i have one

  • is it true you can only shoot 150 gr ball ammo in a m1 garand. i just bought a m1 at a gun show good cond. but i wanna know can you shoot mordern ammo from it? also can i find any surplus stuff online other than cmp?

  • Don't listen to Appleseed and buy a rack or field grade M1. Spend a little more and get at least a service grade M1 Garand. Here is how they are ranked:

    CMP M1 Special (excellent condition)

CMP M1 Service Grade Special (excellent condition)...almost as good as a full special

CMP M1 Service Grade (good to very good condition)...this is the minimum you want to buy

CMP M1 Field Grade (Fair to good condition)......not ideal for serious shooting

CMP M1 Rack Grade (Fair condition) THE bottom!

  • I dont understand why Appleseed is telling its folks to buy a rack or field grade CMP M1 Garand. You want service grade M1s. Or if you can afford it, spend the extra couple hundred bucks and buy a service grade "special" or even a all the way CMP Special with a new Krieger Criterion barrel. These service grade and above M1s will shoot better than rack/field grades, break down less, and the rifling will last longer.

  • @CoolestDude38NC Thanks for taking the time to tell me its nice to have someone help

  • I would also like to say to any Appleseed folks out there. Dont listen to this deal about buying a rack or field grade M1 Garand from CMP. That is the lowest quality M1 Garand CMP sells. You want one of at least "service grade" quality. Service grade is what the U.S. military considered to be acceptable condition to issue to a GI or Marine during WW2 or Korea. The military did not issue rack or field grades to troops, rack and field grades are junk rifles. Service grade plus good ammo.

  • @CoolestDude38NC the grading criteria for rifles are not set in stone. they have gray areas so to speak. there are rifles in service grade condition that may have some minor flaw that keep them from being service grades for example a rifle may be pitted in some ares, that completely excludes it from being a service grade, but I may still shoot better than some service grades! ask me how I know....

  • @CoolestDude38NC I am an IIT2 with the Appleseed Project. We are fully aware that those are the lowest grade M1's. What your point is is beyond me, because the whole point of the program isn't to get qualified to buy through the CMP. It's to learn how to properly shoot a rifle and learn about our heritage as Americans that started on April 19th,1775.

  • @AmericaStandsStrong1 The Appleseed Project does a disservice to people telling them they should buy a "rack grade" POS when Service Grade and above was what was considered acceptable to be issued to a GI or a US Marine during WW2. If I took Appleseed's advice on buying an M1, I would have bought a POS M1 instead of a nice CMP special with a new criterion barrel, new wood and reparkerized finish. Also, I could care less that you are a IIT2, I like the CMP and NRA...screw Appleseed.

  • @CoolestDude38NC We never tell anyone to buy a rack grade. We are letting them know the price, if you went through any other program to get certified for CMP purchases, it would still cost the same for the Garand. It's not like it's some special sale because you went through Appleseed. Rack Grades are supposed to be able to shoot within 4MOA which is considered good, yes they may not look as good, but they can shoot good. We aren't trying to convince anyone to buy a rack grade.

  • @CoolestDude38NC

If you want a rifle that is ready to shoot, go for the Service Grade (or a Special Grade). I have 3 Service Grades (2 will be given to nephews when they're old enough) that will all group 2 1/4- 3" at 100 yards. Get a Field or Rack grade if you want a project

  • @CoolestDude38NC My friend's field grade is a 2.5 MOA shooter. Hard to beat at $495.

  • @CoolestDude38NC speak for yourself, cuz my rack grade garand will hit a brick at 100 yards without fail although my stock definitely has more "character" but that looks cool anyway :)

  • @CoolestDude38NC Concerning your statement about CMP rack or field grade M1 Garands my son wants to buy one, now are they so bad you cant shoot or so bad you cant get a 4'' group at 100yds?

  • @kalsinakov4774 Field grade is certainly shootable. Rack grades will be more questionable, but I've never heard of anybody I know getting one that hasn't been worth it.

  • @kalsinakov4774 Rack or Field grade are both shootable rifles they just are not super accurate but still worth buying for plinking and for the wall. If you want to shoot it in competition then I would say no lower then a Service grade unless you buy a Field grade like I am doing and then later on put a new barrel in her for about $180 and dont have the money now for a Service grade. Hope that helps. Check out the CMP Forums too. Super great people there with M1 knowledge.

  • My Marlin 30.30 lever rifle with aftermarket Williams peep sights shoots way tighter groups at 100 yards than that M1 Garand. And it has less recoil and just as much terminal ballistics as the M1. And I own an M1 Garand so I can compare them, I am not just running my mouth.

  • well i paid 1300 for my july of 42 springfield garand... i've even started to reload for mine.... 150 gr fmj, 49 gr IMR 4895 winchester primers... because the new manufactured loads are too powerful for the operating rod

  • you should get yourself involved in the cmp competition shooting , shooting for a prize is very rewarding .cool vid.

  • PING !!! PING ping PING !!!1

  • my neighbor shot an inch and a quarter eight shot group at the 75 but he also shot national match with that rifle for the marine corps it was pretty cool how he can still hold a group that tight at 70 yrs old

  • Would it hurt if I shot modern 150 grain loads out of my M1? I hear a lot of conflicting stories about this. Some say it's fine, some say it will bend the op rod... what do you think?

  • Tell you one thing you can do to make your rifle a better shooter and longer-lasting - buy a spring kit from Fulton Armory. Replace every blasted spring with new, and beefed-up ones they sell. Saves wear and improves function. Replacing the hammer spring and clip ejector requires disassembly of the trigger housing group. A warning...I did it at home, with hand tools and a vise. It was worth it, but I found out I knew words I did not know I knew...put them together in interesting ways too... ;)

  • cmp by lake erie? or the one in alabama

  • cmp in ohio or alabama

  • i got this on bc2 omfg :=)

  • My grandpa during boot got a 48/50 from 200yds. The 2 he missed he shot at the guy that holds up the targets.

  • Is there a CMP in Texas? And if there is where?

Where can I buy the old Greek ammo that my dad used when he was in service?

  • For those who likely cannot make the trip to the CMP offices, would the "special grade" rifles be worth the extra money over the average "Service grade" rifles?

  • now whats considered field grade?

  • A field grade rifle will likely have mismatched parts, replacement barrels and stocks, as well as minor cosmetic flaws or imperfections. A field grade gn is guaranteed to headspace and to gauge to Army standards. Usually the field grade guns have fairly beat up muzzles, so you will benefit greatly from going to the CMP to pick one out in person. I had to inspect over 100 rifles to find one that didn't have the muzzle banged to hell and back from shoddy cleaning practices.

  • ok thanks always appreciat someone who replies and is helpful

  • @Iraqveteran8888 I don't think there is a signle garand that deserves to sit in a warehouse. Even the ones with crappy barrels and worn parts should be rehabilitated to shootable shape, IMO

  • @WWIIOLgeorgh Amen brother. The Garand is iconic--luckily there are still parts available for bringing them back up to snuff. They're immortal; would never want to be without at least one!

  • @WWIIOLgeorgh Amen, get one and have it refurbished by a reputable Garand gunsmith. (not any old Joe, someone that deals specifically in Garands) You WON'T be sorry.

  • @Iraqveteran8888 if your going to handload for the garand make sure u load them soft, i run 165gr hornady interlocks and run about 46 or 48 gr of imr 4064, i estimate i load these for about 65-70 cents a peice and have had not 1 jam or missfire

  • @deadtofall666 thats 65 cents canadian so probably like 55 cents american and u guys can get everything alot cheeper so probably 45 cents a shot haha

  • @Iraqveteran8888 If you're wanting a ww2 Garand, you're more likely to find one with rack or field grade. I wanted to spend the extra money and get a Service Grade, but requested a WW2 model if possible. I ended up with an M1 dated 1955 in the 5.84 serial range. I was dissapointed at first when the fella I had order it told me and he said "You'll change your mind when you see it..." It looks almost brand new. Only a few dings and the stock is a rich dark brownish red with very defined woodgrain!

  • @Iraqveteran8888 do you know if the rifles are tested for accuracy? because it just says they are in good condition but it doesnt say they were tested. what can you tell me sir?

  • @xxuncexx They are not tested for accuracy, only for safe overall function. Headspace only as far as I know.

  • @Iraqveteran8888 well i guess ill have to buy somewhere else. i dont want do get a bad one by mistake!

  • @Iraqveteran8888 what about the expensive ones? they cant make you pay 1000 bucks for something that cant shoot strait can they?

  • @xxuncexx In terms of the expensive Garands....my take on it is this...A rifle that was kept in storage and in pristine condition has been shoot sure....but my thing is if a soldier drew that rifle and it didn't shoot worth a crap then that why it's in such good condition, because everyone used the rifles that worked good and were accurate. At least that's my opinion....and YES they can sell you a rifle that looks awesome but can't hit the right side of a barn.

  • @Iraqveteran8888 well its just you never know if theres just 1 bad one and it just so happens they send that to you and im not sure if there is a warranty. i was thinking atlantic firearms maybe because it says the tested everything and you got the warrenty on it just in case. well thanks for the info!

  • @Iraqveteran8888 Not true at all. I have a correct H & R that hadn't been fired much at all. It is my most accurate rifle. It gauges in at a 1 muzzle and 2 throat. A close second is my H & R Service grade. It also gauges a one at the muzzle and 2 at the throat. Remember that they used these rifles in basic training too. Part of that is cleaning the rifle. A GI cleaning rod and inexperience can play hell on a barrel. Just because a rifle has been abused, doesn't mean someone liked it.

  • @Iraqveteran8888 some of them were made and just never heavily used. A 1950's vintage one that was issued to a GI in Europe, for example. Maybe issued to someone who wasn't infantry and only went to the range once a year or so. I guess it's fortunate for those who want a shooter that new Garand barrels aren't that expensive. :-)

  • @Iraqveteran8888 Hi i was wondering how good are the Service grade rifles from CMP, Im planning to go buy one next weekend and was just wondering, Do they have original stocks, and are most parts Matching,

    Thanks

  • @Iraqveteran8888 what kind of shooting rest are you using? i like it.

  • @Iraqveteran8888 M1 garand+m1911=state of the art personal home defense system.

  • field grade is one of the lowest ranks CMP gives to M1 Garands. A field grade would not be issued to combat troops during WW2 or Korea. The specs for a field grade are on the sales page of the CMP website or in the CMP catalog. Get a service grade instead.

  • @CoolestDude38NC Thanks alot, I like tinkering but I would spend money on a good Garand my gunshop has some amazing garands not for sale,I drool over them haha.Take it easy thanks again

  • Yeah man, for the price of a rack or field grade piece of junk you can add on a $100 and get a service grade. Or a few more hundred and get a service grade special or even a full special with a brand new Criterion barrel. I dont understand why Appleseed tells you folks to get a "rack grade" that is some of the dumbest rifle advice I have ever read or heard.

Better yet, just skip Appleseed entirely and go locate a CMP Garand clinic and do CMP instead of Appleseed.

  • How many "pounds" are need it to break the Garand´s trigger??

  • About 4 on mine.

  • @Sigfofosauer

Minimal should be about 4.5 lbs, no less.

  • Looking forward to your handload results.Semper Fi.

  • I'm going to get an adjustable gas plug for this rifle just to make things a little easier and give me a few options with bullet weights and powder speeds.

  • so this is the equivalent to the sks but us style

  • @bradsterfordawin

    No not exactly.

They are both semi automatic, but other than that, they are totally different designs with totally different applications and intended uses.

  • i mean that the sks is similar to the ak47 and the m1 is similar to the m14 kind-of a??

  • No, the M1 is a much more powerful and accurate rifle, and sks is basicly an ak47 but holds less ammo.

The SKS shoots same rounds as the ak47 so its not nearly as powerful as an m1 that shoots 30-06.

  • Will those handloads be something like the M1 173gr ammo?

  • No, but I plan on experimenting with some 168 gr. Sierra Matchkings to see how they do in the Garand. Wanting to keep gas port pressure as low as possible and keep my op rod from wearing quick.

Whatever I end up doing, the results will be posted for sure.

I will also be casting for the Garand.

  • Can you shoot soft point ammo in a Garand ?

  • Sure you can, as long as you keep them around 150 grns

  • Why 150grs, what would happen with 180grs

  • @10inmaine

You could use 180 gr bullets, but this rifle is designed to fire a specific load. M2 ball is 150 grs.

Heavier bullets will work but will cause premature op rod wear and gas system wear.

There is also the problem of powder. The garand's gas system likes certain types of powder. You can't use too slow or fast of a powder.

  • Can you do AP handloads for the 30-06?

  • Sure, as long as the projectiles are available.

As soon as I get some bullet swaging dies and a good swaging press, I can roll my own AP bullets!

  • Hey IV8888, I am interested in seeing both handloads and federals AE3006M1 ammo. The federal is suppose to be for the correct op-rod pressures. I'd do it myself but the I am lacking in equipement. (Don't have an M1 Garand yet). I have nto seen the ammo for sale around here either. Ordered the stuff in 308 for my M1A for the competitions that require factory ammo only.

  • I will do you one better than that ASAP. I'll get Hornady's new stuff too.

Will do it ASAP.....Bear with me....lots of pokers in the fire.

Sorry I haven't been on the forum....lots of stuff going on.

  • Yea more cmp porn lol I like that !!

  • @TheRiflemanChannel

    Will do!

  • I love it when guys film and show the groups.

  • @tripmatt1

I don't have it any other way unless I'm shooting steel plates.

I know it may not be a big deal, but anybody can run a camera and make noise.

  • Can you use any ammo with this rifle? Are the newer types of ammo ok with rifle twist etc? Would you be able to use the Norma 200-Grain ammo?

  • you were so still, thought my computer froze up!

  • 5 *

  • get some carbines and just more CMP pron on your next vid.

  • Send me a check for $500 and I'll buy a M1 Carbine and make all the videos you want...lol.

I will get some good footage of the M1 Carbines next time I go which will be very soon.

    CMP porn....lol

  • nice shootin....not too bad for old surplus ammo.....try winchester or hornady 30.06.....u should get some awesome groupings with newer ammo...not bad for a 70yr old gun

  • Looking to work up some good handloads.

    We will see.

I might pick up some of the Hornady Garand ammo just as a control.

  • hey is that greek 3006 ammo corrosive?

  • To my knowledge, no.

I always clean my firearms very well though.

So far, I see no problems with this ammo. Burns very clean too considering.

  • PING! I love it. How about this? Ol' army stories of guys unloading their rifle on the last shot so the ping doesn't give their position away. is this even possable?

  • Not sure to be honest. I know they carried around empty clips in their pocket and threw them on the ground to confuse the enemy...lol

  • but its not the sound of it hitting the ground its the sound of it ejecting from the rifle so thats odd

  • Yeah...Maybe they threw them against the wall or something or tossed them over while a buddy popped a round or something.

In situations of extreme fear and stress, you tend to get inventive quick!

  • One beautiful rifle and piece of history!

  • Thanks you...I love this rifle. It's my new baby. Although the K31 knows how to share!

  • It'll be great if you could do a comparison between the M1 and SKS on their performance.

  • Maybe in the near future. In the meantime, much more meaningful projects to complete.

  • Closeups of every square inch of the cmp office please? Doesn't matter if it ends up being a 50 parter lol

  • I don't know if they would take too well to that, but I will try...lol

  • i want one, live in belgium no gun for me;boe hoe!

  • Sure you can get a gun, it'll cost you some cash and time to find a nice Garand. But it's certainly possible.

  • greek army M1

+ greek ammo? made by pyrkal? you make me proud.... the grouping is awasome for an ex-army rifle....

  • Thanks for the compliments. I will take it for you for sure.

The Ammo is Greek 150 gr. surplus made in 67. It's the HXP stamped stuff so, yes, it's Pyrkal.

  • great rifle, that one will save your life.

  • Dang right!

  • I think this is your new fav weapon!!!

  • It's ALWAYS been my favorite weapon ever before I owned one!

  • Mine too!!!

  • That is some great shooting. The first time I shot mine, I think I put 48 rds through it. The last three shot were my best group, just bigger than an inch @ 100 yds. Probably mostly luck, but these rifle will shoot their part. One of these with a scope on it would do amazing.

  • I agree with you there. The rifle is definately more accurate than me, although I am confident that I can get it under an inch with handloads and proper targets.

  • dang that was good shooting :P

I have a M1 Carbine as well and I hope you will do a vid or two on it, but not untill you've exausted this awesome series about the Grand Garand. 5 starz & added to playlist :)

  • Thanks for the support. We will be being some handloading videos for the Garand ASAP. Have other projects in the fire right now that I think you guys are going to like a lot.

  • Just got a M1917 (Eddystone) today.

  • fine rifle!

  • tighten up your front sling swivel, supposedly when it hits the gas tube it can effect accuracy, good shooting rifle though, thats about what i get out of mine with HXP, i have some nosler bullets and some h4895 ive been meaning to load up for mine to try out but havent gotten around to it yet

  • Yeah, I will be using H4895 on 150 gr Sierra match kings for my initial work with it.

That and I want to try some 180 gr cast bullets through it. Will likely need to pick up the adjustable gas plug first.

  • : )

  • If you could get some close up shots of the different grades to show condition of metal / wood that would be great!

A small overview of the selection process would be nice. How are the rifles marked.... do you grab it off the shelf and take it up ... same or different paperwork than a gun shop?

Did they have any 30 carbines out for display?

Also a fun way to get a grin out of the guys that work there would be to ask if they ever expect to have the M14s in the US arsenal to come through CMP!

  • I will provide answers to your questions the next trip I take out there which should be very soon.

  • Show some of the .30 carbines

  • The next trip I take to the CMP, I will be sure to film the M1 Carbines in greater detail.

  • @Iraqveteran8888 Thanks!

  • Certainly in a class above the SKS I must say. Nice shooting.

  • Yeah. The SKS has it's place and is a lot cheaper to feed, but the Garand wins by far as a combat arm.

  • Makes me want one even more. Another trip to the CMP? Must be nice! Film the trip again just for the hell of it. lol.

  • I will film more on the next trip. I ended up not going today to the CMP, but will very soon I'm sure.
