I may overlook some earlier giallo, but I think Morricone premiered the 'bugged' violins in 1975, in MOSES. The track represents the Plague of the Locusts...

I cannot compare both cues right now, but I wouldn't be surprised if they're the same recording, only edited here into a shorter version.

@zanvander It using the same technique. Strings playing a given series of notes pizzicato, ad lib. It's what you call aleatoric music. The build of voices (bass, cellos, violas etc...) becomes almost like a fugue.

You can hear that kind of stuff in Alien, The X Files, The Matrix, Moses, Close Encounters of the Third Kind, The Lost World, Dirty Harry, Raiders of the Lost Ark etc...

When I listen to this track.. I always picture the "doc" in his office looking how long it would take for the world to be infected by the thing. And I see a world map with little dots popping up to the music as places completely infected until near the end when its all infected. :) Love this track great movie and great score.

This is the music on the Terror Takes Shape documentary menu screen right? I fell asleep once while watching it and woke up shaking in a cold sweat...this music was playing in a loop in the background. Scary shit, I can only wonder at what terrors I was dreaming about.

It's an organism but it's intentionally ambiguous and confusing b/c it's from another world. The thing is a bunch of smaller organisms working collectively until attacked individually.
