  • this is karate shotokai not shotokan

    nothing to see

it is based on fluidmovements and inspired in aikido

his founder is egami sensei, disciple of funakoshi.

    oss

  • Is it just me or that guy just sit on his stance too low?

  • Yes, Taichi is scientific and a great exercise and when done properly, has strong stances and strong, properly executed strikes. If this video is representative of shotokai, then the stances are weak and too long which is hazardous to one's health. There is also no proper execution of techniques. If doing shotokai is not good for one's health and useless for self defense, why do it? Money? Maybe shotokai has rich sponsers?

  • There is no foundation , stability or connection between movemens. There is no real connection between muscle groups when he executes a technique.

He wabbles, and due to the weakness of the stances, his techniques have no mass behind them other than the muscles of his extremities... I hate to be critical but this is just not good.

  • time to empty my cup again

  • hahah he's taken lessons with michael jackson, all that sliding, how could you ever do that without the wax on the floor? and shotokai followers could say they are following funakoshi's theaching, but watch vids of him, looks more like what we all know as shotokan.

  • Yeah I know. His movements aren't solid at all. He doesn't even pause properly at the Naihanchi-dachis and the low blocks. He is just waving his hands around like seriously for a black belt i expect much better. This is a dissappointment.

  • those movements are guarantee of injuries in knees back low and neck, and weakness in joints.

  • You all have to understand that the JKA and the original Shotokan school split after Master Funakoshi died.. Although I am a sho-dan in shotokan, I read into the differences of the styles and its just that Shotokai claim themselves to be the style that Funakoshi wanted to be taught and the rest of the Funakoshi Family wanted to be taught. Also in Shotokai the highest rank that you can achieve is Go-dan (5th dan).

  • I have been a life member of the JKA since '65and trained in Japan from a student of Funakoshi. Funakoshi was alive and thriving during the days of Nakayama, Nishiyama and Kanazawa. The training was not as depicted here. Funakoshi taught the style I learned from Akiyama, Nishiyama, Okazaki, Mikami, Yaguchi, Koyama etc as I have trained with them all. The JKA advocates a dynamic, natural style based on good body mechanics, Egami did not as can be seen. The JKA is very scientific and educated.

  • Even when performing a flowing kata, there must be kime. This has no kime. Sometimes in training, just as an exersize in deep study of the kata we do the katas in slow form like tai-chi with a slow continuous movement. Analysing every tiny movement in detail, all the movement of every part of the body, what these movements represent, can be broken down to and what the mental focus is of all the parts. One flowing exercise. Even in this we still have kime.

  • Yeah I completely agree with you on that. I also feel it's important to by analytical when it comes to the tiny movements. I know even fixing up the littlest moves can make the biggest differences when practicing kata. Also showing the transitions from move to move make the katas more sophisticated through out, and that creates good flow. I have practicing Shotokan karate for 3 and a half years now and i have a rank of brown- advanced and i have learned how to be precise and analytical.

  • I know what you mean I do shotokan and us too our kime uses explosiveness of ki, but I think shotokai has kime with long continous flow (you know when you strike slowly and make it burn, basically I think it's like dimmac or something like that). Shotokai guys correct me if I'm wrong about your style.

  • your right

  • I agree with dogzzz3. Movements must have Yin and Yang both.. Every stance has a science behind it and a purpose. Taichi is very scientific, specially in stances. etc.. But, I doubt shotokan has any scientific background....

  • I can not understand this shotokai style, every kata is a sliding kata.

  • One word - Abysmal

  • It is difficult. Each movement must be complete and supple, yet there has to be continuous feeling.

  • I practice shotokan jka,and can´t help wondering WHY so much difference between rythms...Is there any reason to rush the moves?

  • its not rlly to rush them, its jst to keep the kata flowing as one constant movement.

  • Forgive me, but this is bulls..t. I have hardly ever seen a worse performance of Enpi. No rythm, no stances, no kime, like all other kata videos here under the 'Shotokai' label. Kata is not supposed to be 'one constant movement'.

  • You are forgiven.

I have trained in Shotokan, Wadaroo, Shotokai and Akido, I will not call any style as it is all martial arts. However I travel a 90-mile round trip to train in Shotokai, despite they're being an excellent Shotokan club within walking distance from my door. A very good club with good instructors who know what they are doing, but its not for me.

  • i fully agree
