Aw this is so romantic and so heroic!! And who were the 8 dislikes?? Guess they dont know great acting or moving making! Too bad they dont make movies like this anymore!
My favorite movie of all time. Wonderfully scripted, wonderfully acted and in a time and place so treacherous and exotic at the same time. And to think Bogie and Ingrid thought this was a run of the mill movie that neither wanted to do. Don't even want to think about this movie not existing or the cast that was in it. To this day, many generations later, you still hear quotes from this film, probably the most quoted movie ever made. That tells you how good it was/is.
123 comments...and no one noticed (or, maybe no one cared...LOL) that the Speed of this clip is very slightly too fast...the voices are pitched too high...not much, to be sure...but noticable...it may have been taken direct from a TV showing, when TV stations (or Cable) will speed a film up very slightly to fit a certain timeslot...not a practice that should be perpetrated on a Film of this Stature. Oh well....
@DrClay999 Actually, Vichy France was the puppet state set up after the Germans conquered France in 1940. It collaborated with the Germans and persecuted Jews and others on the Germans' behalf.

It was because the German Government, the one trying to take over Paris, was called The Vichy Government. It is basically symbolism of him leaving the Nazi's.
A friend summarized the ending as follows: "Rick tells Ilsa that she must go with Victor, because otherwise it will prevent him from being all he can be...something like that anyway, I was crying too hard to tell."
The best actors of all time: Humphrey Bogart. Errol Flynn. Carry Elwes. Harrison Ford. Basil Rathbone. George Clooney. And maybe a few others. P.S. This could never be redone by Hollywood.
What a movie! What times they must have been. As Charles Dickens wrote in the opening lines of A Tale of Two Cities .................. "It was the best of times, it was the worst of times..."
... maybe not today maybe not tomorrow ... but soon and for the rest of your life ... you´ll always have paris ... you came to the city i´m ... you never will leave me ... i´m no good at being noble, but it doesn´t take much to see that the problems of three little people don´t amount to a hill of beans in this crazy world. ... someday you´ll understand it ... here´s looking at you, kid ... round up the usual suspects ... there´s a free ranch over in brasil ... use a trip
Bogey was the MAN. The very epitome of smoothness. He could say a nursery rhyme and it would come out just plain cool. Not to mention he got to hit Ingrid Bergman, who was beyond hot. And he got some of the most memorable lines in movie history.
this is so amazing! especially because this was made in 1942 and it looked like the germans would conquer the world. this is so powerful the US was only in the war for 6 months when this came out. its soo amazing how they was soo patriotic even in such a position.
Here's looking at you kid is like a cheers or good luck. it actually wasnt ment to be in the movie. Bogart said it to her during an off set card game...he added it at the last minute.
Rick has identified IIlsa as the Queen of the Gartreen homeworld, and thus understands her invasion of hatchlings are about to descend upon the neutral state of Casablanca. Thus, he's acknowledging that he understands her true alien identity. Thats my interpretation of the line anyway.
"Here's looking at you, kid", is not in the draft screenplays, but has been attributed to something Bogart said to Bergman as he taught her poker between takes"
I can think of a lot of great movies or classic movies that hopefully will never be remade (wish "unremadeable" was a real word, but you all get my point). "The Wizard of Oz;" any David Lean movie, "Citizen Kane;" "The Day the Earth Stood Still;" a lot of movies that would now seem dated or offensive, such as "Song of the South;" "Godfather" trilogy; "Glen or Glenda" (just kidding, that one could actually be hilariously remade! Long live the spirit of Ed Wood, Jr.). Peace.
how times change- inspite of the threat of being shot and arrested by nazis; victor lazlo has no delays in getting his plane to leave at a reasonable time. they also didn't have all the excessive regulations, taxes , unions, that eliminate the joy in flying.
This one scene encompasses 5 of the most quoted dialogue of all time. This is my favorite movie of all time, I don't care if it is in B/W, the screenplan and the acting is phenomenal, and perfect chemistry between Rick and Elsa. Fabulous movie that you can see over and over again.
the climax of the film is all dialogue, really. something almost unheard of in modern films, (the only exception i can think of being pulp fiction). yes, the bad guy gets shot but it's almost irrelevant. i didn't even remember that part. the plot is already resolved by that point the crescendo to most movies is only part of the epilogue here.
I've always heard about this movie...I finally watched 4 years ago. I loved it soo much that I recommended to everyone. Some of my 30 something friends laugh when I talk about it but, when they watch it they get hooked.
Maybe not today, maybe not tomorrow. but soon and for the rest of your life. God, this movie was actually really, REALLY well scripted, well acted and well put together. Bravo.
