I notice that on this board as in many others, we have another unproductive 'science versus religion' debate going on. I don't mind religions if they make people happy. However they don't have a lot to offer in the area of science. And frankly, most of the people who engage them in the fashionable 'new atheist' arguments don't know much about religion, and tend not to know a lot about the philosophy of science either. If anyone has comments about the actual physics, that would be very welcome.

I'm no physicist, but it seems like even a multitude of black holes wouldn't be enough to account for the acceleration. Gravitational force is inversely proportional to the square of the distance between the bodies, and we are dealing with some seriously large distances. And anyway, why would such quantities of mass accumulated at the edges of the universe instead of the center? Their own gravity should pull them all towards the center.

I notice that on this board as in many others, we have another unproductive 'science versus religion' debate going on. I don't mind religions if they make people happy. However they don't have a lot to offer in the area of science. And frankly, most of the people who engage them in the fashionable 'new atheist' arguments don't know much about religion, and tend not to know a lot about the philosophy of science either. If anyone has comments about the actual physics, that would be very welcome.

Science makes predictions that work. The computer you are sitting in front of is direct evidence that science works. Religion has nothing. Religion can try to make claims like "the universe itself is proof" or "the laws of physics are really gods laws" or some such nonsense, but the truth is religion can only look backwards and desperately seek validation. Science looks forward and makes predictions that work. Religion is bullshit, and you shouldn't waste brainpower trying to validate it.

Photographs of the building process have been taken, and letters and papers narrating its progress. If you want to put forward the idea that a god created the universe, first you have to demonstrate (with actual evidence) that such a being exists. If these massive stars are turning into such huge sucking black holes, and we can chart their explosions and creations in days from our own satelliates, that means that you're looking at averages of thousands of stars per year. that would be enough black holes all encompassing the outside of the universe to cause the acceleration, right?

I'm no physicist, but it seems like even a multitude of black holes wouldn't be enough to account for the acceleration. Gravitational force is inversely proportional to the square of the distance between the bodies, and we are dealing with some seriously large distances. And anyway, why would such quantities of mass accumulated at the edges of the universe instead of the center? Their own gravity should pull them all towards the center.

Let's say we're traveling one direction at 3/4 c (c = speed of light), and then there's a bunch of stuff travelling another direction at 3/4 c away from us. Whatever is between us and the other object can see both, and be effected by both, but we would completely lose visibility to the other object, as net v > c.
