'Mike Oldfield'...(and another master).. 'Rory Gallagher' we're both left out of The Rolling Stones Mag's...top 100 guitarists of all time list. Go figure.!!
@Southernmetalhippie, be sure that they loose more than you. Don't worry, this terrible feeling will ease a little bit in a few years (I talk out of self experience!)
Pure class !!!!!!, Oldfield will forever remain at the forefront of originality in English music, he is fucking superb !!!!! Platinum (1979) and QE2 (1981) are his finest works for me! Note at 1.13 and 3.43 the eternal far reaching global influence of J.S.Bach STILL! Orchestral Suite No2, 7th movement, Badinerie, (exerpt). Bach is the greatest achievement in the history of music, but Oldfield has reached global status with his incredible music also !!!!!
I love how Mike makes his instruments seem to BEG for mercy under his usage. He rarely looks at his fingering, which means he knows which string is next and where to manipulate the fret to get the next note. He's nothing short of amazing. I pray for him daily!
I belive there are so many virtuosos out there.. on my behalf I am fortunate enough to know many of them.. excellent and soulful musicians adn most important creative minds, of all genres, what I belive happens is that music industry just dosen't care about them and their music.. the same for the general public! and one always needs to eat ;)
Yes, I loved it in the eighties when it came out, startled many of my class mates... and love it still. If I could play an instrument, this would be one of my favourites!
I miss what Oldfield and Tim Cross could do together. Maybe it's Montreaux, but this was more Celtic jazz than any other rendering, a conversation with drums and guitar. When I saw them do this in Toronto in '82, an on-stage smoke break erupted during the drum solo, with a round of smirks. It was really funny.
I echo all the praise such as "superb", "scary", "wow", "amazing", etc. But one thing that has yet to be mentioned is the mesmerizing curve of his derrière.

I talked with some of my friends about maybe doing this at our school's talent show. They looked at me and said "Who the fuck is Mike Oldfield?"
Sometimes I hate being 17.
