At first the game gives the impression that it's just another run-and-gun game but as you play it you discover it has some cool elements that take it apart from the rest: the ability to increase your HP bar, having to save hostages, getting your character arrested at one point and then having to play as another one to save him, diverse objectives on each mission, etc.

I like what they could manage to do with the PC Engine's sound chip, the music was great and the ending was hilarious too. :'D

I played the arcade version a few days ago. This game takes a lot of elements from Metal Gear, Contra and Ikari Warriors. The guys who created Mercs seem to have been "inspired" by the boss fights.
