They may be real or not to this day it is not known but there were giant squids in the age of pirates and naval prosperity but even then the events for what these creatures are known for (smashing ships and docks in some occasions) were so rare that even when it happens and someone lives to tell the tale..they become legendary. And probably they might be oversized cus in that era it was usual to make the events 'bigger' for more fame,for example someone says it had a thunderous roar and such.
