you are in correct when you say that the steel is almost at 3000 degrees F steel MELTS at 2800 degrees F
when you pull it from the fire it ,looking at the color it looks to be around 1800 degrees F . or less

different steals have different melting points high carbon has a lower, iron has a higher melting point. but yes his temp is wrong. also propane is slower, coal is much faster, propane is just easier to start.

there's only one way a real man checks his temp and that's to stick his hand in the forge. make sure you wear your safety glasses.
