Taikyoku kata are the simplest form of Katas, followed by the Heian series which is maybe 2 steps above Taikyoku in difficulty . They are supposed to be very basic. It teaches the new students the basics of all kata to follow. Most kata flow in this simple pattern with the exceptions being the most difficult to master like Jion, Hangetsu, etc.
@PzS100 That's not the point. That's all about approaching perfection in techniques, without reaching it anyway. Kata are done for reflexes. But I do agree this looks mechanical. Doing them is far less pleasant than just watching, believe me, especially if it's a test, on which depends your belt.
@julien69005 It's more of an exercise routine for white belts anyway. Besides, The beauty of it's simplicity is that it exposes the quality of your basic form. My sensei Drilled me on this kata all the way up to 4th kyu.
Karate is interpreted and taught in different ways from different instructors there are many types of Karate if you didn't know, and they all have very subtle differences in the stances and the Kata as a whole some do the kata rigid like this and some have a more relaxed movement like a heavy body, this would be for example someone who does Shotokai Karate, if you ever go on a course you might find people doing different movements because they have been taught that way, they are not wrong.
to all the nitpickers out there ragging on him. He did an excellent job. his stance could be lower and yes, he lifted his feet a bit much sometimes, but other than that it was a great demonstration and one plenty good enough for beginners to get the idea, past that through experience, practice, and good instruction they will be able to pick up on those finer details. until then, this is a wonderful thing to hagve offered us like thiis. they wont see those problems, they'll just see wat they need
@Dillon02003 the only reason we see those issues is because we are more advanced but as a beginner one doesn't even need to worry about stuff like that yet. and also, those little "problems" are so minor that even as a, I would assume 1st dan judging by the video, it was a good job. stop trying to make yourself look better by shooting him down and at the same time bragging about how 'good' you are by being able to notice it. karate is not a competition of ego. its about improving oneself.
My sensei found this video is a good example of Taikyoko Shodan. His movements are proper in the way it's supposed to be done! The morons below have no understanding of a kata and the the named moves/positions done.
OMFG it is so annoying how you step every single time you do something, your supposed to slide, or glide, and my little cousin could side swipe you in that stance, and he's a orange belt
what a discrace for a blackbelt to not even have the basics. try fixing your stance and then you may pass for a yellow belt. you dont buckle your front knee in and have the back leg bent. then you rush your moves without even looking.
your gedan barai is out in the middle of knowhere and your oi tsuki is not lined up and sloppy. why dont you guys take karate a little more seriously.
This is the problem with putting videos on youtube. you get all the "Experts" putting up their opinion. I checked for some of their videos and find nothing. As a 40 year practitioner of the martial arts. The techniques diplayed here are sound. Maybe the techniques are not what one person was taught, but then it is an intrepretation of what they see and what their body can do. Put your money where your mouth is and let us see your video so we may see your techniques.

@lachieshocker actually, in romaji (japanese written with western characters) it is "taikyoku shodan" - it's spelled phonetically. in japanese (using hiragana/kanji) it would be written to the effect of "taikyokushodan", but since they are seperate words you seperate them when using romaji/anglicizing them.

in the last paragraph, you leading me with that statement is petty as if, and then tying your opinion into your consensus disguised as the majority? i offered to benevolently come to your school on YOUR terms. im networking and you are the one running off at the mouth.
Networking badly from what I see.... how can you expect the man to give you the details of where he lives and works, when you are showing him little or no respect ONLINE... if this is how you to speak to people you do not know and through written word, when you have had time to process your thoughts..... I dare to imagine how you would in person.
your full of shit. you write me like you want to give me advice but, in fact its nothing more than posturing from a self righteous asshole who more or less is a son of a bitch. fuck you and the horse you rode in on. if you talked this shit to me in person id spittle in your face. he made the conversation turn south not i. its not my fault that i can read into what im reading and have no patience for hypocrites.
yeah?, but you want me to post a vid with my face and school on it... right? pfff. enjoy your anonymity ( double standard isnt it?).
....your school closed because your senseis' students are weak and ALLOWED it to be closed. you are not a FAMILY you are bunch filthy pigs feeding from the trough unto which your sensei ladles you offal.
Obviously, your school doesn't much stress the virtues of coutesy and respect. I'd rather be a "filthy pig" as you so eloquently put it than an honorless dog.
The economy just plain sucks and not everybody has money to spare for everything. Also, don't you dare diss the ATA or ANY of it's Sam-bu-nim. It's among the biggest TKD organizations in the world today.
that aire of honor you speak of is just so that the organization that you belong to can brainwash you with the meng se and misuse however loyal ( or admirable ) your honor. the truth is that your school was abandoned by corporate because it wasnt a cash cow.
lastly, you need to discern forthcoming from disrespect. so, the samurai have learned nothing from history? i honor you with the truth. biggest doesnt mean the best...the smallest villages have the best karate\kung fu and are sagacious as i
And the way you speak of honor implies you have none of it. I pity you.
The difference between disrespect and "forthcoming" is crystal clear and you appear to be showing me the former of those two.
You're not sagacious and you have yet to show me any real sort of martial arts attitude. As far as I am concerned, you're just another internet tough-guy looking to run his mouth. Just do us all a favor and take your imagined badassery elsewhere. We don't want it here.
Good solid form, let's remember a few key things; Looking before you turn, Locking out that back leg in Zenkutsu Dachi, Two handed chambers in all turns. Keep up the good work, keep training hard.
nice form, good strong strikes, but just remember in taigyoku shodan you look before you turn,i know its not a big issue, but you get picked up for it at grading and tournaments.
This was helpful but do you by any chance have an example of taikyoku shodan in slow? Been at GKR for 8 weeks now and grading for yellow soon. Thank you.
wingman- Compared to what? I must admit there are some Karate styles that do lack power in their application but their are others that have equal intencity either in a dojo or on the street. May I ask what style you practise?
I see so many of these blind alley comments on utube when it comes to martial arts. This art is better than this art and so forth. Most MA have merits within themselves. If u look on the pro circuit most of the fighters have a background in either bjj, mauy thai, kickboxing or the MA I practice Kyokushin Karate. Kyokushin is by no means pussy. As u practise more hopefully u will grow in respect of other arts and start to compare best with best rather than ur best with their worst.
Nice C.V.. True...kyokushin is the most difficult art. If you`d know the history of kyokushin...you would know that master oyama is the most powerfull (force based) man on earth. So...if wrestling (or should I say ballet) is for men and kyokushin for pussies...I prefer being a pusy-type of fighter than a man-type one. Jiu jitsu is quite well though. keep going with jiu jitsu...better than the rest.
"haha you americans make me laugh lol, pussy shits who dnt no how to use your fists !!! your all fat and spoty lol. you play american football with mask and shit, wtf is that all about mate. y dnt u guys play rugby a mans games . red neck scum ! btw NIGGA i fuked ur mum up the wall last night and now ur gna get a lil bro or sis on the way!!! have fun wid that ! ur mumas pussy stinks too !!!!"
omg! i studied karate for 7 years but i never knew what kind. but I learned these and katas and peenans and yahntsu and tentio (i dont know how to spell them). i guess it was shotokan all along!
o ya, thats what i meant, i have no idea why i said shotokan. but looking at this video i remember learning not to step the way he does, with bring your let in and out. they were very specific about it so maybe this isnt it after all, or maybe this guy just does it wrong, i dont know
dude, I dont think he is doing his best here, plus you have to considerate that this is traditional style and not the sport karate, so the katas kare very stiff and hard. Doing a kata on compentition is totaly different thing.
But you have to take into account what type of Karate this is. Is it Okinawan or American.
Okinawan Karate's Such as Goju Ryu and Uechi Ryu have Mae Dachi and Zen Kutso Dachi, im not fully sure on Shotokan but I know for a fact Goju and Uechi Styles have two differant front stances as well...so
How do we know if its wrong or not?
Perhaps he did not need to prep for these ones, who knows what application this style has.
It's a real shame for me to see this kind of graduation when this poor guy was thought wrong and will continue to develop himself with this kind of wrong evolution. Everytime I see this kind of exemples I always blame the teachers who said..."maybe later he'll get it right! He has alot of time!". Budo is love, but Love also destroys to protect. And this Ego had to be educated long time ago! His Sensei's fault! Sorry, brother. The execution it's not correct. Yet! Masakatsu Agatsu and Keiko!
It seems most people believe that the only way to perform a kata is the way it's taught in their dojo; this misses the point of budo. Each person internalises karate a little to make it work for them; even the great masters (Funakoshi, Nakayama, Kaze etc) differ in their techniques. This kata is done well. The head should move before the body, and the heels should stay on the ground, but a bent back leg is quite normal and effective for westerners, and timing is subjective after all. Well done !
Tnidan, I have a Shodan grade in Shotokan, but I had been training nearly 9 years when I got it... I think I was an exception, though...
As has been pointed out, careful of the heel when moving. Its very difficult to transfer power to a technique when your heel raises as this can cause the hips to rise and so you power is diverted upwards rather than directly into the target.
Don't make the mistake of thinking this is an easy kata. It is basic, but that only means theres nowhere to hide in it.
He did bend his back leg to compensate his step,he also lacks explosive power, but a Shodan black belt in Shotokan only implies 4years of training, Most 10th year students still haven't perfected this kata. Some Sensei(I mean Japanese 8th dan )teach a full stance on the gedan barai, most use the half-stance to execute a better punch on the next move.If he were a 5th year student of mine I would think he was doing OK, if he were an 8th year student of mine, I'd have to beat him down with a shinai.
I hate nit picking but you really do execute your moves before looking, but I think your school may not enforce that so much.
Anyway, I my dojo doesn't teach this kata and I believe the reason is because it's confusing enough to beginners teaching Heidan Shodan, and this kata is nearly the same exact thing with no rising blocks or shuto blocks.
Excuseme, black belt? I think this guy have some mistakes in his execution, for example, his view is wrong, he never see first his opponent before to prepare his defense. Thank´s for the video
Your gedan barai should be half-front facing (hanmi). Also, u need to straighten ur back leg when in forward stance. Avoid lifting the heel when doing oi-zuki.
Bella esecuzione. Sovente c'è la tendenza a privilegiare i Kata "difficili", quindi se non esegui Unsu non sei nessuno. Invece anche un Kata più semplice ma ben eseguito può esprimere molto più di un Kata più impegnativo ma mal eseguito.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
excuse you're a black belt doing a yellow belt kata not only that your stances are not even right in your forward and cat stances you legs should always be straight in the back and bent in the front not bent in both
This kata was made for Jigo Funakoshi (Funakoshi son's) and don´t belong at the series of Shotokan katas, but its considered an excellent practice to all heians. This ejecution of taykioku shodan is correct, except the hand must arrive at the same time with the foot in oi tsuki.Great for show us your kata.
Oh and I forgot to add...Funakoshi (in Karate-do Kyohan) said that one should be able to complete Taikyoku Shodan in 6 seconds. Which is reasonable considering the 1,2 timing that I mentioned earlier.
Taikyoku Shodan is known as Kicho Poomse in Tae Kwon Do (at least according to Grandmaster Kyu Ha Kim) and is nearly identical. One of major difference with Kicho Poomse is with the timing; the TKD instructors don't emphasize the 1-2 timing, as gigakick suggested.
Basically, the kata could be performed in sets of two, 1,2...3,4...etc. Downward block into lunge punch, as if one motion, and the last two punches down the center as two fast lunge punges. Anyway, this guy did okay. It's not bad.
Taikyoku shodan is taught in many popular styles (karate, tae kwon do, tang soo do, etc.); and certainly in almost all karate styles, especially Shotokan. If you look in Funakoshi's book, Karate-do Kyohan, he clearly states the Taikyoku kata as being important for forming the basis of the other kata, such as Heian.
taikyoku is especific to which style of karatê? because I train under shotokan style, and this is similiar to heian shodan, but it has less steps and diferent steps aswell
I think this is only in Shotokan, but it's not even teached everywhere, I think. It's basically Heian Shodan, only easier to give you a easy start to kata.

Networking badly from what I see.... how can you expect the man to give you the details of where he lives and works, when you are showing him little or no respect ONLINE... if this is how you to speak to people you do not know and through written word, when you have had time to process your thoughts..... I dare to imagine how you would in person.

Here? No thank you. I don't need some psycho-crazy tracking me down through what I say here (You can never be too careful these days.)
Besides the school I was in was forced to close three weeks ago. (Sad, i know, but a reality of this recession we're in)
MagusJoseph 2 years ago
yeah?, but you want me to post a vid with my face and school on it... right? pfff. enjoy your anonymity ( double standard isnt it?).
....your school closed because your senseis' students are weak and ALLOWED it to be closed. you are not a FAMILY you are bunch filthy pigs feeding from the trough unto which your sensei ladles you offal.
opticannon 2 years ago
Obviously, your school doesn't much stress the virtues of coutesy and respect. I'd rather be a "filthy pig" as you so eloquently put it than an honorless dog.
The economy just plain sucks and not everybody has money to spare for everything. Also, don't you dare diss the ATA or ANY of it's Sam-bu-nim. It's among the biggest TKD organizations in the world today.
MagusJoseph 2 years ago
that aire of honor you speak of is just so that the organization that you belong to can brainwash you with the meng se and misuse however loyal ( or admirable ) your honor. the truth is that your school was abandoned by corporate because it wasnt a cash cow.
lastly, you need to discern forthcoming from disrespect. so, the samurai have learned nothing from history? i honor you with the truth. biggest doesnt mean the best...the smallest villages have the best karate\kung fu and are sagacious as i
opticannon 2 years ago
And the way you speak of honor implies you have none of it. I pity you.
The difference between disrespect and "forthcoming" is crystal clear and you appear to be showing me the former of those two.
You're not sagacious and you have yet to show me any real sort of martial arts attitude. As far as I am concerned, you're just another internet tough-guy looking to run his mouth. Just do us all a favor and take your imagined badassery elsewhere. We don't want it here.

wingman- Compared to what? I must admit there are some Karate styles that do lack power in their application but their are others that have equal intencity either in a dojo or on the street. May I ask what style you practise?
gateway1965 2 years ago
i practice jiu jitsu, mua thai, wrestling (greko and freestyle) and i have boxed since i was five years old
wingman2232 2 years ago
Wingman - Thankyou wingman for getting back to me but you still did not answer my original question. Karate is pussy compared to what??
gateway1965 2 years ago
muai thai or bjj
wingman2232 2 years ago
I see so many of these blind alley comments on utube when it comes to martial arts. This art is better than this art and so forth. Most MA have merits within themselves. If u look on the pro circuit most of the fighters have a background in either bjj, mauy thai, kickboxing or the MA I practice Kyokushin Karate. Kyokushin is by no means pussy. As u practise more hopefully u will grow in respect of other arts and start to compare best with best rather than ur best with their worst.
OSU!!
gateway1965 2 years ago
I'm betting wingman won't be able to walk, let alone fight when he's in his 50's!
sapprun 2 years ago
Jiu jitsu is quite well though. keep going with jiu jitsu...better than the rest.

omg! i studied karate for 7 years but i never knew what kind. but I learned these and katas and peenans and yahntsu and tentio (i dont know how to spell them). i guess it was shotokan all along!
6045310708 3 years ago
Thats Taikyoku shodan, but it can also be an earlier form of the pyungahn poomses and also Taihokyu
brasshandmartialarts 3 years ago
o ya, thats what i meant, i have no idea why i said shotokan. but looking at this video i remember learning not to step the way he does, with bring your let in and out. they were very specific about it so maybe this isnt it after all, or maybe this guy just does it wrong, i dont know
6045310708 3 years ago
Hmmmmm, I think the tkd's "taeguek" is more deserving of the characters "太極". Don't you agree? This doesn't look very "Great Ultimate" to me. >,>
halodaemon 3 years ago
Is that a joke... I mean he can't be black belt.
I gave up Karate 10 years ago (brown belt), but I can still do Taikyoku Shodan better than him.
Shame on you.
pyt82 3 years ago
dude, I dont think he is doing his best here, plus you have to considerate that this is traditional style and not the sport karate, so the katas kare very stiff and hard. Doing a kata on compentition is totaly different thing.
mselan88 3 years ago
its still not very good, his stance is not long enough. and he's not looking before the turns.
6045310708 3 years ago

Yet! Masakatsu Agatsu and Keiko!
satoribox 3 years ago

Matakoshi 3 years ago
He did bend his back leg to compensate his step,he also lacks explosive power, but a Shodan black belt in Shotokan only implies 4years of training, Most 10th year students still haven't perfected this kata. Some Sensei(I mean Japanese 8th dan )teach a full stance on the gedan barai, most use the half-stance to execute a better punch on the next move.If he were a 5th year student of mine I would think he was doing OK, if he were an 8th year student of mine, I'd have to beat him down with a shinai.
tnidan 3 years ago
The rule is to wait 3 second after kiai.
awp47 3 years ago
I hate nit picking but you really do execute your moves before looking, but I think your school may not enforce that so much.
Anyway, I my dojo doesn't teach this kata and I believe the reason is because it's confusing enough to beginners teaching Heidan Shodan, and this kata is nearly the same exact thing with no rising blocks or shuto blocks.
sedativechunk 3 years ago
He's a black belt and yet he made a mistake that really bothers me. In his stance his back knee is not supposed to be bent.

how do you know what you're hitting if you don't look where you're going? the technique is nice though.
petrosoap 3 years ago
Excuseme, black belt? I think this guy have some mistakes in his execution, for example, his view is wrong, he never see first his opponent before to prepare his defense. Thank´s for the video
chimoltrufio 3 years ago
"he never see first his opponent before to prepare his defense"
That's the diference between knowing what he's doing to memorizing stuff.

Your gedan barai should be half-front facing (hanmi). Also, u need to straighten ur back leg when in forward stance. Avoid lifting the heel when doing oi-zuki.

bello...indubbiamente il piu semplice XD
ItalianxAlex 3 years ago
Bella esecuzione. Sovente c'è la tendenza a privilegiare i Kata "difficili", quindi se non esegui Unsu non sei nessuno. Invece anche un Kata più semplice ma ben eseguito può esprimere molto più di un Kata più impegnativo ma mal eseguito.

excuse you're a black belt doing a yellow belt kata not only that your stances are not even right in your forward and cat stances you legs should always be straight in the back and bent in the front not bent in both

Funakoshi considered taikyoku the ultimate kata. And one that most would return to after much study. Where is it stated by Gichin why he created it?

Goldvellius 4 years ago
taikyoku shodan è molto usato nel karate shotokai.
però si pratica in maniera molto fluida, lunga. Si pratica con posizioni molto basse e quindi per ovviare ai problemi alle ginocchia il piede avanti viene fatto puntare all'esterno anziche' all'interno come nello shotokan e altri stili.

I had to learn the Taikyoku for my yellow belt in Shuri Ryu... But the "turns" after the three seikens are different in my discipline, apparently. :S
RyouRan 4 years ago
Oh and I forgot to add...Funakoshi (in Karate-do Kyohan) said that one should be able to complete Taikyoku Shodan in 6 seconds. Which is reasonable considering the 1,2 timing that I mentioned earlier.
HBayani 4 years ago
6 seconds!!?? WOW!!!
billysharp15 4 years ago
Taikyoku Shodan is known as Kicho Poomse in Tae Kwon Do (at least according to Grandmaster Kyu Ha Kim) and is nearly identical. One of major difference with Kicho Poomse is with the timing; the TKD instructors don't emphasize the 1-2 timing, as gigakick suggested.
Basically, the kata could be performed in sets of two, 1,2...3,4...etc. Downward block into lunge punch, as if one motion, and the last two punches down the center as two fast lunge punges. Anyway, this guy did okay. It's not bad.
HBayani 4 years ago
Taikyoku shodan is taught in many popular styles (karate, tae kwon do, tang soo do, etc.); and certainly in almost all karate styles, especially Shotokan. If you look in Funakoshi's book, Karate-do Kyohan, he clearly states the Taikyoku kata as being important for forming the basis of the other kata, such as Heian.
HBayani 4 years ago
taikyoku is especific to which style of karatê? because I train under shotokan style, and this is similiar to heian shodan, but it has less steps and diferent steps aswell
lastadolkg 4 years ago
I think this is only in Shotokan, but it's not even teached everywhere, I think. It's basically Heian Shodan, only easier to give you a easy start to kata.
