What I *really* don't get is why they didn't go with the vaguely retro-modern (1920s/30s style) lettering at the start of this sequence instead of the underdesigned, uninspired, off-the-shelf Times Roman font.
That really let down the final version of the Troughton intro, which had some great howlaround visuals.
@NotATube well sydney newman said that it shouldn't have big, colourful (a metaphor. it couldn't be in colour), because he didnt want it to be like one of the typical science fiction movies with monsters that are clearly men in suits.but, it didnt quite turn out like that did it?
Does anyone know where I can find a copy of the Doctor Who titles sequences in Quicktime format? My brother's a huge fan of the show and wants to know as soon as possible.
I get the bloody creeps knocked out of me every time I see Patrick Troughton's face up close like that! But you know, I like that psycadelic lava lamp effect. It gives a bet of a charm to it, does not it?
these aren't the full set of tests. Neither are the tests for the hartnell sequence on the beginning DVD! There are yet EVEN MORE test clips of both of these titles featured on the special feature about the Tom baker title sequence on the DVD of "Robot"
The bassline without the melody swoop repeats three times then goes into the bridge and middle eight before going to the main melody line to end with the sting.
some of these clips were included in the titles. Those bits at the end were definetly not. They could have used those in the transition fron Troughton to Pertwee!
I have managed to locate the full version of this theme. If you still want it message me privately through youtube with your e-mail address and I'll forward it!
They did the spangled version for the episode openings but when they married it to the Troughton titles, as the titles faded out so did the music, and they didn't keep the full version on tape for the episodes on tape;they wiped it.
This was ACTUALLY an edit made by Mark Ayres;the spangles disappear on the opening titles then the middle eight section takes over without the spangles but for the titles WAS faded out;what Mark did(as he owns the BBCRWS library now)was edit on the remaining extended music from the end titles before the fade happened on the episodes including the repetetive bassnote and hisses part where there is NO melody line before editing on the bridge and going into the middle eight again reprising the main
@glenrea Some of the remixes were re-created by Mark Ayres from Delia Derbyshire's original tapes and using the original documented notes & timing because not all the mixes were kept but the paperwork was (good ol' BBC & their paperwork obsession). He also did a full stereo and 5.1 surround version of the original Hartnell mix; that may be what he was talking about, but then again probably not.

Best thing is to download a video converter - you can get some free or for a couple of quid.
Then find a video of the titles and convert.
Alternatively get a video capture card and record to your hard disc

what's that meant to be at 0:41 i think it looks like a christmas tree
callumleo 4 years ago
The clip at 0.41" is actually a tunnelling effect
AnthonyUK 4 years ago
a square tunnel.
I think that the effects that start at 0:49 look like upside-down flies wings.

If you have a download programme such as Napster or LimeWire you can download it. This version is actually a specially lengthened version for the DVD

@icemachine79 I don't see why you attack the BBC for their apparent "paperwork obsession" when the law requires that they keep that paperwork?
