This is why I think she can sound like Gwen Stefani sometimes: her upper register is a bit thin and her lower is very rich and from the deep chest, her phrasing has randomness and flourishes--some lines drawn out beyond the beat and others are clipped to it. But I think Sarah Slean is a more talented and imaginative singer. There's really very little similarity : )

@ChocolateFish12345 Great story but I don't think any of it happened. The fire was a metaphor as she left everything behind except for the piano and moved to the cabin. She did do a painting of a cabin on fire but this one still stands and she did go back to visit it.

I think that I got the idea for all the dancers there (the cabaret girls and the breakdance couple).

Sarah's music is not easy to define. It could be rock, or pop, or ska (somebody said that it sounded like No Doubt), or cabaret. But, actually, it's like all that at the same time. So they just put it in the same video, all the same time, with Sarah making faces.

It ain't a bad video, but it's not enough for a song like "Lucky me".

Sarah is a 'real' musician who can tell you for example how many sharps or flats B major has(5 sharps) and what notes they are(c,d,f,g,a). It is shocking how many successful musicians have no knowledege of even basic theory.

While a basic knowledge of music theory is helpful, it's not essential. Paul McCartney never learned how to read music until after the beatles broke up! Theory is a nice tool for writing, but if you can make beautiful music with out it, why bother?

Sometimes you dont need technical things, some people just seem to have music in their blood. There are people who can play a fuckign awesome guitar but have never had a lesson in their life. Even more impressive are people who can play piano with no knowledge of notes. Its great that Sarah knows all this stuff, but I'm positive she'd be amazing even without it. Its kind of just like an extra perk.

It is impossible to determinate juste by ear what is the note played (A,E,D,...) exept if you have Very very very good ears...I learned basic theroy (from 4 years now) and i can't determinate when i hear a note if it is a A or a E^^... But that not for that reason that i can't play guitar not badly (sorry for grammar mistake)

there are a few ways to tell what note is being played. most people just listen to the note or phrase and play it on their instrument until they figure out the notes. some lucky people have perfect pitch and they can tell if its a C or E flat or whatever just by hearing it. its not uncommon to listen and figure it out though.

There are courses offered on teaching perfect pitch as well now... although I find if youve got an instrument handy, you shouldnt have an overly hard time teaching yourself. Either way, just putting that out there.
