Constancy is for the morbidly unimaginative. Men were born to claim as much 'Virgin Territory,' as possible. A happy man is a fruitful, virile man. He expresses and confirms himself by plowing as many fields as he can sow.
hmm, I agree with the comments saying Sarah seems very innocent and unrefined. She was about fourteen or so when she came to court in reality so maybe that's what they were trying to portray?? I mean, imagine a teenage girl from the country coming into the very adult and male-dominated London Society. You would have to have nerves of steel to not feel any intimidation!
When you think about it, Emily probably did not mind Jimmy cheating with the maids because it gave her a break from "Breeding." The maids had no worries because their children would be taken care of and educated. A Win Win for everyone.
@Sapphirekatgirl2 From what I have read, the men often abandoned maids when they tired of them. So it would hardly be a 'win' If she got pregnant, bad luck to her.The child would be illegitimate and the man wouldn't see it as his duty to feed and clothe it, let along provide it education. For a long time there was no law to make the man obligated to care for their illegitimate offspring and even when such a law came into being...
@CrimsonPetal100 ...the gentleman would hardly escape with more than a slap on his aristocratic wrists (i.e a small fine). Someone wrote in an instruction manual from a later era "you should sooner throw your daughter out into the streets than let her go into service" that really shows how vulnerable they were. Because of this, horrid things like infanticide and prostitution became all the more common. So Emily should not have turned a blind eye to this in my opinion.
Emily is so practical in her disappointing situation with her husband. I love her. And poor Coraline. She married a politician. What could she expect?
see the point with women as housewives is that they have to put up with mistresses and scandals more than they could bear. Facing with scandals men can fight a duel, women could do nothing but pretend ignorance. sigh sigh sigh
Caroline looks utterly disgusted with her husband, or disiillusioned. Henry was also hypocritical since he himself aspired to an Earldom through using Sarah.
If I'd been Caroline, I'd have told my sons that they'd have to pay their own gambling debt, with no more hand-outs from Dad.
And I agree about Caroline being selfish. She's also kind of immature, always whining that she's the eldest, it's her "right" to have care of her younger sisters, etc. If she couldn't raise her own sons right, how would she have done with her sisters? Emily was by far the better choice.
Constancy in men is rare, true, but it is attainable. These poor women had to delude themselves into thinking it was ok in attempt to not die from heartache.

These people were repulsively, no, no, grotesquely wealthy.

Love her wicked laugh at the end. But of course infidelity is bad!

Henry was very lax when it came to disciplining his sons. What a jerk he turned out to be. Caroline isn't much better.

And they used to call women the weaker sex. Unbelievable considering what they had to put up with and all with a smile on their face.
