@9xprincess Let's all be clear here; while the Republic of Macedonia is welcome to hold Alexander the Great as a historical figure (after all, his empire did include their modern day territory), it's a disservice to say he "just" called himself Greek. He was Greek. He was born a Greek prince in the capital, Pella, in Greek lands. He spoke Koine Greek. He brought about the Hellenistic period. To say he was Macedonian, not Greek, is like saying someone is from Paris, but not France.
@ContradictoryNature Actually he was half Greek half Serb. Your own historian Plutarch recorded it as: "Alexander is by his father's lineage Heraclides from from the line of Karan". From the Heracles's lineage we wee that Karan is the son of his offspring Temen. "Karan" is a sanskrit word meaning remotely "building with hands" and "exposing anger with hands". Karan's capital area in Serbia still bears his name and many its inhabitants his surname.
@TheBladeEdge An argument could be made for Serbian blood. However, using the same logic, I could claim that I'm actually Icelandic because my great-great-great-grandfather was from Rejkyavik. However, national identity is the product of culture, habitation and behaviour. Distant relations play a weaker role the larger the degree of separation. While blood stays the same, it holds no inherent qualities that culture cannot overwrite. Alexander was Greek, while his ancestors may have been Serbian.
@ContradictoryNature Same logic Greeks used for 2 millenniums. Greeks inhabited Balkan in 1500.B.C. but it doesn't matter it used to be "Thracian" land, its Greek now and it stays Greek, correct? See, Aleksandar was born in "Macedonia", he was schooled in histories, writings and traditions of both Greeks and Thrace (Rus). He was a failed attempt to bring the two countries closer which is evident when he conquered Greece. How can he be Greek when he was the King of Macedonia?
@TheBladeEdge Like I already said, saying he's Macedonian and not Greek is like saying that he's Parisian but not French. And why are you talking about something as vague as Thraki if you say he's Macedonian? Third, he didn't conquer "Greece," because Greece wasn't a country, it was a cultural identity covering many different tribes/states. He and his father unified the city-states, much in the way Qin created "China" from the "Chinese" states. That does not diminish his Hellenistic identity.
@ContradictoryNature See, Macedonians aren't Greeks. As Athenians are a part of Hellenic culture, so are Macedonians a part of Ras (greek: Thrace). Why didn't Alexander bother to take northern territories, before going all the way to India? If his northern border was only that of regional Macedon he would leave his homeland exposed, right? That is because all the lands north, reaching to Danube were his from the start. Thats where he got his numerous army from.
@ContradictoryNature Greeks in general were better armored and more expensively equipped then "Macedonians", only way he could have ever beaten Greek states and continued onward to India is superior numbers.
@TheBladeEdge At this point, you're simply making things up. It's well-documented that Alexander's kingdom never reached much beyond Phillipi, really. His success in annexing the northern regions was (very simplistically) due to their willingness to join a powerful Hellenistic empire that had already defeated the regional superpowers. As I've said before, there's nothing wrong with saying that Macedonia has a claim to Alexander as cultural heritage. But denying his Greek-ness is simply wrong.
@MrAristos04 No its not its an island near Greece,,just off the coast. Alexander was from Macedonia to, he juts called himself greek because he admired them. I know I got confused to my sister had to explain it to me!

@ContradictoryNature Excuse me, I meant to say he spoke Aeolic Greek, Koine Greek was the language spoken in his Empire after his death.
