Larry Ownings is a true class act. Being the guy who beat Gable is on par with being the guy to beat Jesse Owens and he has absolutely no arrogance about it.

larry owings did beat dan gable fair and square weather we like it or not he did but for gable to come back and beat owings in the trials TWICE and then not give up a point in the Olympics i think really says something about mental toughness and a out the true hero he is to wrestling

I'm with greatdanebarca (and this is not the real DaGable btw; just use the handle:).... Owings is only mentioned in passing as a spoiler, but what a set of rocks and then a performance to back it up, when it counted. America is all about the underdog stepping up, and seems to me the Owings performance is only eclipsed in this regard by the Miracle-on-Ice in 1980 by our Hockey team.

Yes, the psychological tactic does work. Muhammad Ali used this tactic and it worked most of the time. I have to give Larry Owings his credit when credit is due. They both stepped on the mat and the better man won that day (Larry Owings). Dan Gable is still a great wrestler though.

what in the world? the overtime "take-down" points awarded to owings wasn't even a takedown. i guess things were different back then:/ still, 160+ and 0 record is amazing, while i give props to owings for stickin to to gable, anything can happen and we obviously know who the better wrestler is.

lmao there was a movie made based on this its called vision quest this guy drops down two weight classes(just like owings) and challenges the best (like gable) and beats him in a huge upset

A major motion picture is a great idea but it would be just wrong to concentrate on the ncaa final match alone. Dan Gable deserves nothing short of a 5 star movie of his entire life story from childhood through olympic gold and coaching at iowa. Dans life story if told properly should make one of the greatest movies ever. The only problem is what actor in hollywood could do him justice. Seriously think about it,come on. Step up someone PLEASE.

this is bullshit. why dont we hear more about owings. its like theyre saying gable only lost because he was psyched out, owings was just confident and he beat him fair and square. wat he did was phenomenal and should receive praise. a movie about this would be great, but wrestling is hard to fake if the actors arent trained.

@greatdanebarca Agree in some respect, but Owings not being able to consolidate this victory in the following 2 finals appearances may have diminished his status in wrestling lore. Owings sure doesn't get the credit he deserves--the vision and conceptualization of his quest was, in my opinion, put in motion picture form with VISION QUEST. TAKEDOWN with Lorenzo Lamas my all-time favorite amateur wrestling movie...If ever come across original VHS version, please advise.

@DJScrew123 Gable surrendered only 1 point in Trials & Olympics combined ... Owings scored the onlypoint on a takedown Owings was no slouch ... 2 bad he finished 2nd Place as #1 seed in NCAAs each of his final 2 yrs.

@DJScrew123 folkstyle and freestyle are two completely different styles of wrestling. i have friends who get there asses kicked by someone during the season and then they shit on them at fargo
