I saw hundreds of these beauties in my backyard this whole week. They come back every year about this time but I have never seen so many before this week. last year there were approx. 7 last year. WOW they sure are noisy !!!!!!
From what I've read, the pet store story is just a rumor. I heard they came from an aviary in Arcadia, off the 210 fwy, they were supposed to have only 30 parrots in 1 enclosure, but had 300 (supposedly). One day the net tore & they all escaped. That's probably an urban myth too. Google "feral parrots Los Angeles" and you'll find articles. Bottom line, they're beautiful, and endangered in South America. Glad they're safe here.
OMG I live in Hollywood and I see/hear them all the time. They're so loud lol. I've heard they were released from a burning pet store in Hollywood years ago to prevent them from burning and they have been breeding all over Los Angeles or California ever since.
There are a few flocks of these birds in Orange County as well. They seem to like the Fullerton area as they find food people have dropped on the ground from the local restaurants and grocery stores to eat.
i live in holland in europe, and we got a few cities were these birds live sins 10 years or so, and their population is groing and they spread themselves slowly al over the country, and holland does not has a tropical climate.
@nebilmetalhead11 Try Culver City or Venice, east of Lincoln Boulevard and west of the 405. Almost any morning along Culver Blvd, there is a big flock.
@WychOfAvalon If anyone else asks, tell them to Google the California Parrot Project and contact them; they should be able to get people to the right help center.
These birds are mitred conures. They don't need animal controlas they are established already. They are apprx.9th generation. They are endangered in their native South America . Also Pasadena is home to another endangered species flock of Mexican Red Headed Amazons. It is also Illegal to try and catch these birds. Apparently, they adapt to our weather. And they are in no way competing with our native species of birds for space.. As usual out of hawks, falcons. Humans are their worst threat.
@luckstergal Actually one of my neighbors owns one of these parrots. It just doesn't sleep at night. It usually starts squawking at 12 midnight to 2 in the morning. Then it takes a break and starts squawking again around 3 or 4 in the morning, until around 12 noon. It is so loud, it feels like I'm living in a rain forest. I think I'm gonna call the cops on 'em, although I heard the cops can't really do anything.
Actually it was a pet store in the late 70's that burned down in West LA. They first put a $500 reward for them because they didn't think they would survive. When they realized they were surviving, they changed it to a fine for touching them.
These are indeed parrots. Cherry headead Conures to be exact. I am familiar with the focks in Los Angeles and we have cherry headed Conures and Green Cheecked Amazons through out the county
