I'm not saying they're awful - they're different and far from my taste. I'm simply saying the media suppresses/ridicules metal. So many people are exposed to Coldplay on TV/radio but rarely the (IMO) far greater skills of many metal bands. I can't see how the Scientist could compare to, say, Dream Theater's live version of Hollow Years for example or any of their far more complex material.

The point is many (not all) people follow bands like this because the musically illiterate media tells them they're great and it's 'cool' to like them. So people then crap on about how meaningful the lyrics are and how 'absolutely amazing' the band is but they're not. In contrast, metal contains some of the greatest musicians and best songs but the media just takes the piss because they're too thick to understand real quality. Hyping of the mediocre pisses me off.

You can apply the stereotype idea to teens in multiple ways. For example, I, being a teen myself, am assumed by the way I dress and act, to like "hip hop" or "dance & trance". Infact, those genres are just sickening. As is most mainstream music. Music is meant to be an art. Not a contest of who can sell an album more than another.

Coldplay has done something right, where others, in my opinion, have failed.
