I live in 36 miles south east of charlotte and i have seen this too. Many times, looks like it is over charlotte, it is huge and bright it fades out and then shows back up, i have looked at it through binoculars it does have a triangular shape but i have seen it change shapes and look more cigar shaped. Glad i am not the only one who has seen it. made a believer out of my husband i have been watching these things for 5 years now.

Please tell us exactly where you were? (What road is that in front of you and which direction are you facing?) This will help rule out aircraft as the source of the light. My guess is it's an airplane(s) on approach at Charlotte/Douglas and the runway is on same flight path as your location, making it appear to be standing still. Eventually, it appeared to move to the right which makes me think the airport is slightly off to your right.

Get serious. Landing lights on distant aircraft. They appear brightest when the aircraft is pointed in your direction and also stationary. As they turn the focused beam appears to dim and the planes appears to move off slowly.

Most airlines today require pilots to turn their landing lights on below 10000 feet.

I have seen dozens of these, a lot of them in front of clouds as well. They have flown right over me at about 1,000ft and were completely SILENT and was a solid glowing sphere! They often just hang in the sky with varying brightness.
