they need to make video software so you can angle the camera so i can go into video FX and make it so even if it did spin i could change it so that way it always looks upward it would sell :P
@jeremiahjw The feathers at the back of the arrows, made to stabilize the flight of the arrow. Hence, "flights". They appear to not show up on camera? Ex : 0:08
@jeremiahjw Ah, well there's your problem. Sweet video, anyway.
If you decide to do this again, perhaps you could leave the flights on, but put a counter-weight onto the arrow to match the camera's weight to prevent the massive spinning.
That wouldn't help. Flight feathers are designed to encourage spinning. A counter-weight wouldn't stop the motion of the air rushing past the feathers.
@jeremiahjw possibly i'm an ideas man, or just a nutter!
i am still trying to find the video, I saw it a a while back now, the issue with it it was just too long, the good stuff was hidden away in the video, it had a very crappy start.
Ok, now you need to get a second one and attach it to the chicken, turn them both on, and fire the arrow at the chick while it's watching. If you miss, do it again.
I did this on a rocket firework so it explodes at the end!! it's on another channel though: "BALLlSLlFE" check it out :) (p.s. just copy and paste that channel it's spelled funny)
@JRayMalcolm Cool, someone suggested a firework after seeing my arrow video. I tried it on a bottle rocket firework, but it was too heavy. Do you have a photo of what kind of firework you attached the camera to?
@jeremiahjw sorry I dont, but it was essentially a model rocket that explodes at it's highest point. you could try it with a model rocket as well. Just be sure to use a counter weight so it flies strait up.
@jsnyara Yeah, you don't have to worry about breaking them because they only cost about $10 to fix. Just need to make sure the memory card stays safe.
@ShowToddSomeLove I wanted to do it on an overcast day, otherwise the brightness of the sky would have caused a ton of problems with the auto exposure.
@ShowToddSomeLove you need to use these cameras in very even lighting conditions, bright days send the iris control crazy and you would have seen zip all, sort of basic camera craft 101
did 1:04 remind anyone else of evil dead? except in reverse order i think, maybe its the forest, the trees and the way the camera moves, totally similar to that one scene xD
Super! I wonder if you can attach the camera maybe in front of the fletching, so we can see the arrow bend? Lighter arrows REALLY deform from the pressure of the string pushing it. Also shooting into a target, so you can see it coming! Love the video, great idea well executed!
@bcgrote There are some other videos out there where they shoot it at a target. It would be hard to attach it right after the fletchings, as the camera would probably be swiped off when I fire the arrow.
Camera should have been stuck to the bottom of the arrow, by the top of the camera. The weight of the camera caused that side of the arrow to point downwards, hence the spinning. In the last slowmo you can see that the camera was clearly upside down. An equal counter weight of equal size on the opposite side may counter any spinning, the camera may need to be stuck side on instead though, although I'm uncertain.
@freelanceterry I'm aware of this, reading back I see now that my wording was slightly off. What I meant to say was that the extra weight of the camera causes the arrow spin to settle on the weight side, visible best in the last slow motion video where you can see the arrow rocks back and forth rather than spinning.
It would be better to eliminate this rocking altogether by balancing the arrow correctly.

@Badhabitsjay dude...arrows are designed to spin. Eliminating spin would cause it to fly crazy off-line and there would be no control.

I shot an arrow into the air,
It fell to earth, I knew not where;
For, so swiftly it flew, the sight
Could not follow it in its flight.
So I tied a camera on its shaft
Shot it both ways, fore and aft.
Now I know where the arrow fell;
Do you think the video will sell?

the one which I would really LOVE to see is a camera in a fireworks shell, put a rope tail on it as you don't want too much spin
