It was undermined by institutions such as Paneuropean Union, Pinay Cercle, Mont Pelerin Society, etc. which were sponsored by European aristocracy and moguls whose vast capital was compromised by the possibility of revolution and nationalization.
So, yeah, if you're a big ass industrialist loaded with cash or a princeling with a huge inheritance, sure, it makes sense to gloat; otherwise you're a dumbass :(

I think the last thing the Americans wanted to do at that point in time was start making demands of the Russians with regard to its future leadership or that of the republics. We could not be seen to be interfering in their business which would be used by those opposed to reforms as pandering to the west. I think we made the right decision in that regard.
As we've found, communism only erupts in societies under extreme circumstances, and doesn't ever work. Although capitalism has its many problems, it's still the best economic system in the world that we know now. All you communists are just going to have to accept that. The only reasonable argument you may have is about China, with its high gross demestic product rate, but politically, look at the government corruption there, and look at its poor human rights record.
