It's the other way around, elephants down lions easily. They can even kill entire prides. 1 lion is no worse than a little mosquito when compared to an African elephant. 3. There is no account, no report, of a male lion bringing down an African elephant or a white rhino alone.

I agree, Lions are the most recognized and the most venerated of all the Big Cats.

Just because Lions doesn't exist in Asia anymore, except for the few that are still in Gir Forest, many people will be surprise how the Chinese, India, Sri Lanka, Cambodia, Philippines, and such have venerations of Lions. They have more statues of Lions than anything.

@command76 They were hunted down and killed. If you look at the artworks in Cambodian Temples you'll see that Lions were looked upon as gods or associated with gods. In India the goddess Shiva is shown riding on a Lion. Lions in Sri Lanka were idolized and their flag bares a Lion symbol. China has Lions as their guardians.

There's only less than 150 lions left in the Gir Forest, but they are genetically deform. Tigers for the most part took the place of Lions when they disappeared.

@Naturalhit both the Tiger and the Lion were hunted down and killed, but because lions lives in prides they were easier to found and killed compered to the elusive tigers and both were treated as gods or associated with gods coz basically both were the same animal to the most Indian people, In India the goddess Shiva is shown sometimes riding on a lion and other times riding on a tiger, and in India where the to great cats lives it's the Tiger whom considered the national animal of India...

@sausama77 Shiva riding on a Lion pre-dates Tigers and the same can be said with Cambodia, China, and such. TIgers are the only big cats left in India, unless you count the Asian Lions in Gir Forest, which for the most part are deform due to severe in-breeding.

Lions were not only killed, but there was also a bounty on them due to Gladiatorial Games that the Romans spread throughout Europe and parts of Asia. 95% of Barbary Lions suddenly disappeared in a very short amount of time.

1- the lion has an impressive look and a loud roar and live as a king in his pride which gave it that reputation.

@sausama77 Actually, Caspian Tigers lived along side Lions and it was the Lions that most people venerate. The goddess Shiva in India is pictured riding on the Lion and the Lion is worshipped along with her. Kali is seen standing next to a Lion and the Lion is worshipped and symbolizes as power.

China celebrates the Lion and they do a parade dance for it with people dressed in Lion custom. Sri Lanka worshipped the Lion and their symbol of Lions is all over. Philippines sees the Lion as a symbol of power and prestige. Cambodia has more Lion symbol on their temples than they do of Tigers.

So Western and Eastern took more pride on Lions than Tigers. Also Watch NAT GEO on Beastiary Veneration. Lions are #1 and Eagles #2 Bulls #3 and Tigers are not mention

Lions was idolized by Greeks, Romans, Babilonians, Egyptians, Persians... He appears 130 times in the Bible, he is a sign of the Zodiac, he appears in the flags of Iran, Singapore, Tribe of Judah, England, Scotland, Belgium, Venice's Republic... And there are many statues of lions in the World (London, Budapest, Venice...)
