It looks cute, but when you put a rabbit on it's back it gets into tonic immobility. This looks like a relaxed position, but it's really not, the rabbit is in a severe state of fear and as a defense mechanism it 'plays dead'. There has been a lot said about this and a lot of people still do this, but it is considered dangerous for the rabbit and shouldn't be done unless absolutely necessary.
My girl bunny has no problem lying on her back and even falls asleep when you cover her eyes. My boy bunny hated it at first but now does not mind so much.
I thought it was dangerous to put a rabbit on it's back...? My rabbits get all sleepy lime that aswell but I rarely put them on there backs as I've been told it's dangerous for rabbits.
Nope, its safe as long as you hold onto the carefully, the only problem is if they flop out of your lap, and hit the ground hard, so try and do it holding them tight, but gently, or sit crouched on the floor, still holding firmly..
Omg way too much cuteness!!! I had a bunny a long time ago, but he was a jerk. He'd bite and scratch anyone who tried to touch him. He lived out his life with us though. we rescued a kitten and she got all the affection lol
And this is pure instict of the bunny, it's not that he likes to lie on his back.. When they are on their back they automatically get in a sleepy mode, like when sharks do..
Don't risk your bunny a broken back just so u can stroke his tummy..
@ntdnr1 do you have any sources to back up your argument? I've heard both sides, that it's fine to do and that it's dangerous but never heard anything except opinions, no one seems to have facts.
Hello all, the owner of this video explains how to put a bunny on his back but PLEASE DO NOT DO THIS, handle a bunny like you should and not play like a toy with it and lay him on his back..
Bunnies have really weak back, and putting them on their back will cause him to break his back sooner or later you can pet him without laying him on his back
aww its cute, but bunnys don't like being on their backs. They are only still as they are petrified! Like i said its cute tho, and helpful when you want to clip their claws.
@williammcauley Lots or rabbits are indeed turning into an apathic state when you lay them on their back. However, there are also lots of rabbits who just sleep that way and even like to be petted when lying on their back. You shouldn't try to make a rabbit lying on it's back when it isn't nessecary (like for an investiagtion at the vet's office), but as long as it lies like that all by itself, there is really no harm. Most rabbits don't like to be touched when chilling out, though.
That is sooo cute!! My rabbits would never sit still like that when I pet them. You should see me when I try to cut their toenails!! its awful!! After I'm done it looks like a tornado blew through my house!! Is ur bunny that bad when you cut his/her's toenails? If not how do you keep her/him still?
@silencedscene Don't force him to anything he doesn't want and take your time (meaning that could be several weeks). Talk calm and slowly and make sure your hands aren't cold and smell natural (no perfume or cremes). Never grab it suddenly and never approach it from above or behind (that's a predator move!). Always be calm around your rabbit and offer food in your hand. After a while the rabbit should realize that you can be trusted. Some rabbits are just nervous by nature, though.
...And always pay attention, because when your bunny is done with being on its back, it will suddenly jump to it's feet, so you have to make sure your bunny doesn't fall to the floor and get hurt.
If your bunny still doesn't like being on its back, please stop trying! Some of 'em are just not into it. That doesn't mean he doesn't love you. ;)
My Pookie doesn't mind being "tranced" either. Sure makes it easier for things like toenail clipping and taking his temp at the Vet and checking his front teeth! The breed is a Holland Lop and my theory is that they are more comfortable because they could kick butt with those back feet if they really wanted to, so they are less timid.
I can never get our rabbit to be that calm while he's on his back, which is why I don't like to put him there anymore. We have his honesty in almost all the other areas...is there a way to help him relax on his back?
I'm just wondering, because my rabbit scares easily, and I've read and heard that bunny massages and relaxation techniques can help them deal with stress and avoid it in the future. I don't want to force him though!
Thanks! SUCH an adorable rabbit! I'm so glad you shared!
@Tink0714 I had one just like it, english seal lop eared, it was soo calm, then I got a girl of the same bread. and she is not nice at all, but still somehow love her to bits XD
can u please tell me how rabbits sleep on their backs?? My rabbit dos not do that. i can get him somewhat relaxed on his back but he never falls asleep?
Runescape4344, chill. There is absolutely nothing wrong with laying a rabbit on his back. It's even recommended for nail trimming.
And they're a lot stronger than you give them credit for. My bunny has twisted, squirmed, run into things, slid into things, jumped from my shoulder to the floor, tumbled into boxes, and otherwise done things that if he were as delicate as you claim would have him dead several times over.
He's not only alive but healthy and active. So lay off.
Omg can you show me how could you make your rabbit stay still like that. Its super super cute

To everybody wondering how to lay a bunny on its back for cute fuzzies:
When you have the bunny on your lap, carefully but surely turn it on its back. Handle it like you would a baby.
When your bunny isn't used to being on its back, make sure to support it constantly with both your forearms (unlike what I am doing in the video).
Also keep stroking the bunny's head so it knows you're close. But know that most rabbits don't like to have their tummies touched! ...

Rabbits spines are different to us humans.
So it will snap their spine and they will choke to death laying on their wind tube
