Reminds me of my senior year of high school. Timeless music that reaches into your soul and carries you with elation to your favorite memories and drags you against your will to those hurtful times you wish you could forget. Whenever I hear this song it evokes such memories of 1990-1991.
It doesn't matter who I am or where I come from, all I know is that this album is the most beautiful thing that I have ever heard in my entire life. It bears a unique kind of emotion that goes far beyond my comprehension and all my love and appreciation is directed upon.
I don't mean to sound like a fanatic person in a negative sense, I just want to say that this music touches my deepest emotions in a way nothing else can...
This is my first time listening to the song (I have no idea why it took me so long). I expected to cry my eyes out since I'm already in such an emotional breakdown but I didn't. I can relate so much to this whole album. It gives me hope for a brighter future. Disintegration was my favorite from this album but now this song will be filling my lonely and somber days with hope. It gives me hope that I can make it through this stress. This is possibly the greatest song ever.
close your eyes and slip away. timeless. wish and bloodflowers are pretty awesome as well....every albumn has a different overall sound but this is how i want the cure to sound all the time.
Spending many nights drowning in these deep waters as a teen 15 years ago. One of the best dark and ethereal atmospheric-somehow "concept"- rock albums ever made, together with Pink Floyd's "The Wall", Joy Division's "Closer", The Chameleons' "Strange Times", Sigur Ros' Agaetis Byrjun, Godspeed You Black Emperor!'s "Lift Your Skinny Fists Like Antennas to Heaven" among others
How many nights did I sit and listen to this.... It got me through my life and connected in a very deep level. There will never be another like Robert in this world.
I will always think of the same person when ever I hear this track..& I think the first hundred times I played it..felt just like the first time...an immortal track..
@njucx Most snares in the 80's have a huge compressor and a "hall" sounding reverb on them. I actually use FL Studio and there's a perfect digital drum, and when you put the "at the venue" reverb effect it sounds just like this. 80's and big. Depeche Mode Has a similar snare sound.
oribibi I totally agree, this song is bittersweet. Totally hypnotic and reminds me of my not so wonderful youth. I hated my teens but now married & happy I can listen to the music that pulled me through my miserable teens - robert smith thank you for this....xxx
When I served as a missionary in Kenya, the lyrics to this song crossed my mind whenever I wrote to or read a letter from my girlfriend. We have been married for 20 years now. Great song.
i have no idea how anyone could dislike this song..maybe because it's so deeply sad..people are afraid of sadness sometimes..but this is epic and timeless and beautiful..
how could i stumble upon this song. holy..oh my, I'm 16 years old and have found something truely unique. this will stand the test of time. forever. i swear it

So that now I could look back and say, 'good times', instead of hearing an old song and enjoying it and being totally uncool because I'm not with he times.
@Triangulove That´s true, but I suppose the cure isn´t as prevalent a band as they once were in the 80´s, especially now for people around my age group. What can I say, I didn´t know of them in my teens!
truly desintegration ,great in a sad way and this song just brings a tear to my eye every single time i hear it.it sounds like a sad story, that always hits you in the head with a bad end.
I had read once that Robert considers this their best work, their best album, the most successful, about it great, but he hates it, loathes it, he said it is very personal and comes from a dark place. Listening to it, you can tell, it takes you on a full rollercoaster ride of emotions, tears of joy to tears of sadness, all in the same song. To me that is what makes this such a great album, all of us have been there, we all can relate.
this is probably the most amazing piece of music ever made. i have many TOPXX songs from some great artists of the 50s 60s 70s 80s and even 90s but this is epic. EPIC!
Disintegration was the Cure's magnum opus. Nothing they released after this was even remotely as good as this. I consider this the final "true" Cure album. I saw them in 92 in Detroit and the show was recorded for "Show". I'm in the beginning of the film in the parking lot.

I spent the better half of '89 listening to this album - it was the soundtrack to my journey of self-discovery. I was 18. Last night I caught my 17 year old son listening to it in his room, he told me he couldn't stop. I'm glad he's broadening his taste in music, the only he would listen to for years was trance - but I guess in a way this album is quite trance-like in that it puts you in one, a beautiful trance.
One of the best albums of all time, you can listen to it from beginning to end constantly as it's not like other "good" albums where it's just a collaboration of good songs. It's hard to explain but the tracks feel like more than just songs when you listen to them (I'd say Lovesong is the one exception).
Anyway, this song in particular is the best example; always seems to have that "distant" effect on me, makes me forget about everything else for ten minutes haha :)
Disintegration is imo one of the 5 best albums of all time. The song Disintegration, Same Deep Water, and Prayers For Rain will allways be close to my heart, and I will allways love The Cure...
this song is about the moments when you are lying beside your soulmate before you sleep and it is tearing you apart to say goodnight because you want to look into her eyes forever and never to close them. You know in your heart she feels the same....afraid that you won't wake up beside her in the morning
My favorite song from "Disintegration" which has always been my favorite album by The Cure. It's one of the albums that got me through those dark and turbulent teen years. It's hard to say what life would have been like had it not been graced by their music. Absolutely astonishing stuff.
Oh absolutely! They're still in my top 5 bands of all time. The bonding between the listener and the music just tends to happen when people are younger as far as profound effects and changes go. They're just an extraordinary band all around.
Such a great album. Every song makes people feel different. My mate was affected by Pictures of you. I was affected by Untitled, and I see people are also affected by this. Only great and beautiful music can do this to a vast amount of people.
We were laying on the floor and I was holding her while this song was playing.that's when I told her that I was in the same deep water as her. That seems like a thousand lifetimes ago. I think of you every second of every day and sometimes I cry.for her and for me. Even though I'm staying afloat............I wonder......will I@ ever see things the way you seen them? Either way. Ill keep
Wow. Legendary tune. Watching the dawn rise with yet one more silk cut before sleep. That stunning album artwork, Wembley '89, lebanese red seal, JD & coke, A level retakes and poetry to get laid. I hope life worked out for eveyone who loved this song.
This song is a true Masterpiece. I was lucky enough to catch The Cure on tour in Florida a few years back. Best live music I've EVER heard and that's coming from someone who lives and breathes live concerts. Go "The Cure" :)
Back in 1989 I bought this album and listened to it on my walkman.I used to work afternoon shift but Decided to stay on the train and go to the city.I walked around the city in the rain listening to this sublime music. The rain just added to the whole experience.this night in August was one of the happiest of my life.evrything just came togeather in that space. I walked to st Kilda and realised the sun was coming up.This album is still a constant friend.
This brings back torturous highschool memories and I see it does for others as well. This was such a dark time in my life and this album was the soundtrack to it. Their best album hands down. After this it all went downhill.
I might not agree with myself some other day but it's the deepest, saddest and most beautiful song ever.

Anyone know how they recorded the drums for the album? How they achieved such a booming, heavy snare sound

Either way. Ill keep
swimming

this is a song
& u can only get into it at a certain point in your life
where everything and everyone is against you
when u'r in a same kind of place as those you can't reach
when you feel in heaven before u even left..

We should all listen to this together, far outdoors, deep in the night, deep in a forest, candles all around, after much red wine.

It's really nice to read the various comments, and know that I have little to say, but "Agreed." :)
