After Lars ulrich started his pursuit on sueing napster I permenantly went off the band and refuse to pay anything to metallica. Their latest stuff (After the black album) was just bollox.

Well, I agree, if a band changes too much, it obviously is going to lose popularity with old fans. The thing is that an open minded fan (or person) will see that it takes a true master to change your art according to how you change. If an artist doesn't change his music, he makes the same over again, his music is dead. Metallica is alive, and with every disc they create a new unique sound, and for that they are great. People don't have to like it, but it shows how great Metallica is.
