They were magnetic. As you can see at :25 he moves them around before he has them check the coins. He takes half of them into each hand. You can tell because when he picks them all up it makes a loud clinking sound from them snapping back together. Each time he sweeps his hand over them he is pulling them apart and putting them back together so it looks like they either multiplied or disappeared. Cool trick bro.
