I spent a happy month in Turkey reading Max Hastings's superb rendering of the Falklands Islands war, but the icing on the cake was My Secret War, by the Guy Burgess contemporary, Kim Philby. This trailer stands up. And go see Tinker, Tailor...
I think this whole production is an insult to intelligence. Making a light comedy out of Englishman upper middle class wankers supporting murderous regimes is crass. Bennet, the aloof socialist finds it impossible to get to the heart of the matter. Try Traitor by Dennis Potter if you want a real dissection of the issues.
This is an iconic BBC production from 1983. British TV drama has seldom equaled it in the brilliance of its writing , acting and direction .The Great and Good Alan Bennett in top form!
ChiChiFargo, This is Stalinism (Russian and English) - the decaying embers of a joyous revolution under siege by the empires of the world and effectively ground into the dust. "...Bring me my chariots of fire!", the revolutionary William Blake sang out in celebration of the US and French Revs. But the fire burned cold in Russia. When it burns hot again, there must be some of this "joie de vivre" as you see in Alan Bates's portrayal of Guy Burgess. His name 'burgess' is English for 'bourgeois'.

You can now get this excellent piece on the DVD 'Alan Bennett at the BBC' published by the BBC. It also features 'A Question Of Attribution'.

@sheppertoon I saw both somewhere back in the 70s or 80s. Both excellent.
