  • did you have to put springs and retainers in to fit these cams? are there any other mods u have to do to get the cams working right? or do u just fit em and go?

  • @rogueorange valve springs and retainers would normally be recommended for a cam job, cam gears as well are needed for adjusting the new timing. Valve springs and retainers aren't exactly compulsory but if your gonna rev the tits off it (god knows you want to) your valves will begin to float ie. detonation. As i was told when i wanted to do it lol

  • It just has a larger/longer lift and duration.

  • that depends on what brand of cam you are comparing, if you are talking about hks 272 to hks 280 then the 280's should be more aggressive but if you were to say kelford 272 to hks 280 then the kelfords would be more aggressive.

  • I just wanted to stop in here to mention that I no longer own this car. I sold it and bought a 2004 Audi S4. I do really miss how fast and nimble the Evo was, but the 4.2L V8 in the S4 is still pretty quick and the car handles surprisingly well.

    I really just needed a good daily driver that was still an overall "sports car" and wouldn't draw too much attention. I do still have other toys though! A highly modded MR2 turbo and a modded E36 M3.

  • coming from someone with an S4 as well...get rid of it, its expensive to maintain and not super reliable, plus low power, im thinking about getting rid of mine

    A typical break-in of aftermarket cams consists of 10-15 minutes at 1800-2200 RPM immediately after first start, and then 50-100 miles of varied RPM below 4000 RPM.

  • Jun cams are good but if your going to using your stock ECU, you may have a hard time getting them to idle. Jun cams have a huge lift compared to HKS 280's but they usually make daily driving a PITA if your using a stock ECU with a flash of some sort (ecuflash or ecutek).

  • i saw go with jun, they get more hp, go to turbo magzine web site, there a big 3 or 4 part thing about cams on an evo and they test all the brands and tell you which is best

  • With cams and such it all depends how you drive, yes its not going to get sticker quoted mpg and yes the civic gets better mpg but bang for buck it gets great gas milage compared to most v8's and still pulls a ton of power.

  • well an engine that idles at 1400 is all good when u have 280 cams. i only have to say u better have a rather large gas tank, or hope u live across a gas station. Cause all u be doing is fill this bitch w lots of juice quite often bro! Gr8 lancer never the less!

  • What is with all of this misinformation? I do not need a large gas tank, nor do I need to live by a gas station. My car uses no more gas than it did when it was stock when not boosting. It's when I boost that I use more gas. It's all about tuning. My car has been through over 100 dyno pulls and several hours on the street just for tuning.

  • I see what you are saying. I guess my fuel consumption would be crap too if I spent a lot of time on the track. I really don't drive my car hard at all. Actually, I rarely drive the evo in general. I've put maybe 500 miles on it so far this year. I have 2 other cars I use for getting around (96 M3, 91 MR2 Turbo) so that I keep the miles low on the evo.

  • and evo does have a fairly small tank though. even Sport Compact Car commented on that, it was pretty much the only thing they didnt like abou the car haha. but when not boosting it would get very good if not the same gas mileage..maybe. i mean every car is different especially if it has been carefully tuned like yours

  • with 272 cams idle has to be about 1100 rpm.. so with 280 cams it would be at 1400rpm. keep it so low is a bullshit. the engine turn bad

  • Idle is set at 850rpm. 1400rpm would be pointless and a waste of gas.

  • Lol, 1450 I love the people that throw out numbers and think they know what they are talking about. Considering that my 40R Evo is pushing 736 Ground HP about 900+ BHP, with 280 hks cams and the idle is set to 1,000 exactly. Performance > Ricer Sounds any day of the week, thx for playing.

  • shut up if u don t know the tinghs if i m not sure of what i say i shut up. 1400 rpm is the right idle fort 280 cams because under this rotations engine can t burn good all the gas. i can t explane better i know less english i know engines not language.

  • Dude, you obviously DON'T know engines. You would have to be an idiot to set your idle at 1400rpm. This is a car, not a sport bike.

    Ahh fuck it. I'm gonna set my idle at 5500rpm because the higher the idle, the better my gas will burn, and better burning = more awesome. It's so obvious....I can't believe all the reputable tuners out there haven't thought of this yet.

    Higher idle = Better fuel burning

    Better burning = More awesome

    More awesome = Really good engine turning!
