I like that you can remove the strap easily. This is nice if you use a tripod. The strap seems to get in my way when doing so. The one I have does not have steel cables.

You strap it to an object, rather than leaving your camera on a seat or the ground next to you, so that someone can't quickly run past & grab it. You wouldn't strap it to a pole & then go & do your shopping & come back hoping your camera was still there.

The idea is that a thief can't easily cut through it. I don't have any idea what the whole "strapping it to an object" thing was about.
