Just to update you Manophet didn't die in a UXO accident. Fortunately the clearance organisations in Laos have an excellent safety record. Unfortunately he died of a brain condition, something which may have been treatable had been in the west or neighbouring Thailand. Proceeds from the film will be going towards UXO clearance and helping the local infrastructure.
"largely untouched by western influences" ha! theres a river in laos where you can ride down on inflatable rings and people throw ropes out to you so they can pull you into their bars and drink anfetamine cocktails, its the next fucking thailand.
Thats why the narrator used the word 'largely'. Vang Vieng is not the norm - I work in Laos as a tour leader and have travelled extensively around the provinces. Xieng Khouang is a little more reflective of Laos in general. Maybe try visiting Phongsali or Non Kiouw next time for a more authentic Lao experience.
